Kevin Durant took six shots against Boston, and Houston still won by 16. That’s what makes the Rockets a tough draw for Minnesota. Getting back on defense can take away some easy baskets, but it still leaves the Timberwolves with Alperen Sengun to deal with while trying to stay close on the scoreboard.
Getting back is only the first job
Houston beat Boston 109–93 on Monday. The Rockets won the fast-break points 18–2 and the paint points 50–34, while Sengun finished with 26 points and 10 assists. Those are two different headaches for a defense. Houston can get ahead of you for a layup, and when you get set, Sengun can still score or find someone else.
Our projections give Houston about 27 assists to Minnesota’s 22 and roughly five more rebounds. The assist gap fits what Boston just saw from Sengun, who gave Houston a way to score even when Durant barely shot. The rebound edge matters for a different reason. Minnesota can make a good first stop and still have to defend again if Houston gets the ball back. That gives the Rockets another way to create separation even if the break is quiet.
Ball got help when Milwaukee hung around
LaMelo Ball hit six threes and scored 34 in the 112–100 win over Milwaukee, but the game was still close going into the fourth. Jaden McDaniels scored six points in the run that gave Minnesota breathing room, and Ayo Dosunmu finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Wolves shot only 42.7% and still found enough offense because more than one player helped at the right time.
That’s the part worth bringing to Houston, where DraftKings favors the Rockets by 8.5. Ball getting hot gives Minnesota a way to answer an early run. Getting another useful stretch from Dosunmu or McDaniels would help the Wolves keep answering after Houston adjusts. Houston has enough ways to score that a single big quarter from Ball may only buy Minnesota time.

The spread and the total ask different things
Houston held Oklahoma City to 98 and Boston to 93 in its last two games, and both stayed under their posted totals. But the Rockets scored 119 against Oklahoma City and have hit at least that many in five of their first eight games. Minnesota has reached 111 in all eight of its games. The same Houston run can widen the margin at 8.5 and push the game toward 220.5. Minnesota’s scoring beyond Ball will help decide whether the combined score gets there.
For Minnesota, the two jobs go together. Finish defensive possessions and there are fewer chances for Houston to stack easy baskets. Give Ball some help at the other end and those stops can actually turn into a run of Minnesota’s own. If only one of those things happens, the Wolves can have a decent night in stretches and still spend the fourth trying to close a gap.
