Portland’s strong start already includes the result it wants Friday: a win on the Lakers’ floor. The Trail Blazers beat Los Angeles 136–129 last week and arrive at the rematch with five straight road victories. The Lakers have their own answer, winning three straight behind an extraordinary scoring run from Luka Doncic. That makes this a test of whether Portland can keep matching the Lakers’ offense, rather than simply a question of whether its road form travels to Los Angeles.
Portland has already shown a way through
The first meeting produced 265 combined points, with Portland winning by seven. That gives the Blazers a concrete success to build on against this opponent, even with the Lakers’ offense rolling into the rematch.
Portland’s latest win showed how several contributors can keep its offense going. Damian Lillard scored 25 points, Donovan Clingan added 24, and Deni Avdija had 21 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds in a 132–119 victory at Phoenix. AP reported via ESPN that the Blazers outscored the Suns 43–25 in the second quarter, turning a five-point deficit into a 13-point halftime lead.
Lillard and Clingan supplied scoring alongside Avdija’s playmaking, giving Portland several ways to answer Phoenix. Keeping that range of contributions going would help the Blazers avoid asking one scorer to match Doncic on his own.
Doncic gives the Lakers their strongest counterargument
According to AP’s report on ESPN, Doncic scored 40 in Wednesday’s 116–103 win at Sacramento, his sixth straight game with at least 35 points. He made six threes and 12 of 13 free throws, while Austin Reaves added 21 points. The Lakers won comfortably without needing the kind of combined score seen in their first meeting with Portland.
Our team grades make offense the clearest distinction. Los Angeles carries an A- on offense against Portland’s C, while both teams have a C+ defensive grade. The Lakers therefore have a stronger offensive assessment even though Portland owns the better win percentage so far. The Blazers’ actual results remain an important counterweight: they’re 6–1, with their only loss coming at home against Memphis.
DraftKings lists the Lakers as 2.5-point favorites. Los Angeles is 7–2 outright and 6–3 against the spread this season; Portland is 5–2 against the spread. Each team has covered its last three games. The spread therefore brings together two sides whose recent results have beaten expectations; following the hotter betting streak offers little separation here.
Our rebound projections favor Portland, about 45 to the Lakers' 41. That points to another part of the game where the Blazers could keep pace despite the offensive grade gap. These are total rebounds, so the forecast doesn’t specify how many second chances Portland will create on the offensive glass.

The total needs more than the first meeting
The total is 231.5 points. Between the first meeting’s 265 combined points and Portland’s latest game at Phoenix finishing with 251, the high-scoring possibility is easy to see.
But Portland’s wins immediately before Phoenix ended 118–110 at Denver and 112–90 at Utah. Both stayed under their respective totals. The Lakers’ latest win also stayed under, with 219 combined points against Sacramento. These teams have recently won through very different scoring environments, so the rematch doesn’t have to resemble their first encounter.
The practical question is how much Portland has to score to stay competitive. Doncic’s recent production and the Lakers’ offensive grade create a demanding assignment, while Portland’s distributed scoring and successful road results show why the challenge is credible. Four of Portland’s seven games have stayed under their historical totals, compared with five overs in the Lakers’ nine, leaving mixed season-level scoring signals as well.
The first meeting showed Portland can win a scoring contest here, while the Denver and Utah results showed the Blazers can win with less offense. That flexibility is what the Lakers have to overcome. For Portland, sharing the scoring load again would make Doncic’s next big night a challenge it can answer, rather than a game it has to chase through one player.
