UCLA has done more than win its first four games—it has beaten the spread in all four, too. Now the No. 21 Bruins visit No. 13 Oregon, where the Ducks are favored despite having a loss on their record. The interesting question is whether UCLA’s early scoring surge can hold up against an Oregon defense we rate much more highly, or whether the Ducks’ passing game will make this a different kind of test.
UCLA’s start deserves attention
The Bruins have scored 45, 28, 52 and 54 points in their four wins this season. Their latest result, a 54–3 win at Maryland on September 26, was their most emphatic. FOX Sports identifies this trip as a major test for a UCLA team emerging as a Big Ten contender in Bob Chesney’s first season.
That start gives the Bruins a credible case for making Oregon work. It also contains a reminder that their games haven’t all followed the same script: UCLA allowed 38 points against Purdue before holding Maryland to three. The unbeaten record is clear; how well the Bruins can limit a productive Oregon attack is less settled.
The biggest projected gap is through the air
Our team projections put Oregon at about 445 total yards and UCLA at about 305. Most of that difference comes in the passing game: roughly 275 yards for the Ducks compared with 170 for the Bruins. The rushing comparison is closer, at about 170 yards for Oregon and 135 for UCLA.
That makes UCLA’s ability to sustain drives an important part of the matchup. We project about 16 first downs for the Bruins and 22 for the Ducks—a picture in which Oregon generates more offensive progress, while UCLA has less room for possessions that go nowhere. Our defensive grades also favor Oregon, A+ to UCLA’s B, adding context to why the Bruins’ recent scoring totals face a demanding test.
Oregon brings a strong recent performance of its own. In its 41–27 win at USC on September 26, the Ducks produced 504 total yards. Still, Oregon hasn’t been consistently dominant this season: it beat Boise State 34–27 and lost at Oklahoma State 39–31 before winning its next two games.

Winning comfortably is the tougher standard
In DraftKings’ current spread, Oregon is an 11.5-point favorite. That asks the Ducks to do more than win. UCLA’s four straight covers give that distinction some weight, while Oregon has covered in two of its four games this season. Those results are useful context, but the more relevant test here is whether the Ducks can turn their projected passing advantage into sustained separation.
Oregon’s strongest case is the combination of greater expected yardage and a defense we rate more highly. UCLA’s counterweight is an attack that has repeatedly delivered this season, alongside an unbeaten start. Sustaining drives is the hinge: if the Bruins can keep moving the ball, they can make separation harder to sustain; if their possessions stall, Oregon’s projected edge through the air becomes a more demanding problem.
