Utah vs. Boston Preview: Can the Bruins Slow the Mammoth’s Fast Start?

Utah is scoring freely, while Boston is trying to shake off consecutive 4-1 losses. That contrast makes Thursday’s matchup interesting: can the Bruins keep the Mammoth’s early scoring surge from carrying into another road game? Utah has won three of its first four games, but its modest favorite status and our closely matched shot projections suggest Boston has room to make this competitive.

Utah brings the scoring momentum

The Mammoth beat New Jersey 5-3 on Tuesday, their third game with at least four goals this season. They’ve scored 17 goals across their opening four games, with a 4-2 loss to the Rangers the only setback. Boston, meanwhile, has scored just once in each of its past two games, most recently losing 4-1 to Ottawa on Monday.

There’s a special-teams wrinkle, too. Utah’s official preview says the Mammoth enter with the NHL’s top-ranked power play. It’s an encouraging early-season sign rather than an established season-long advantage, but it gives Boston a clear concern when the game moves away from five-on-five play.

A small favorite, not a huge shot advantage

DraftKings’ current moneyline odds put Utah at -125 and Boston at +105. The Mammoth are favored to win, but the market isn’t treating this as a mismatch. We also rate Utah’s attack more highly, with a B offensive grade compared with Boston’s C, though the expected shooting volume offers an important counterweight.

In our shot projections, Utah comes in at about 28 shots and Boston at 27. That’s a narrow gap, so the Bruins’ recent scoring trouble doesn’t translate into an expectation that they’ll barely test Utah’s net. Boston’s route back into this game is to get more production from a broadly comparable number of shots.

Our projections also put both teams at roughly three power-play opportunities. Utah’s early success with the extra skater makes those chances worth watching, but we don’t project a large advantage in how many opportunities it receives. Making those chances count could matter more than the difference in overall shooting volume.

What matters most

Utah has the stronger early scoring case, supported by its recent results and our assessment of the two attacks. Boston’s counterweight is the close shot outlook: the Bruins don’t need to erase a huge projected volume deficit, but they do need to turn chances into goals. Special-teams execution is the clearest pressure point in a matchup priced much closer than the recent scorelines.
