Cincinnati just ran for 252 yards against Texas Tech, giving unbeaten Utah a substantial ground-game test on the road. The Utes needed Devon Dampier’s 150 rushing yards and a late defensive takeaway to get past Houston last Saturday. Utah is a 6.5-point favorite at DraftKings, but the Bearcats have a concrete way to challenge it if their latest rushing performance carries over.
Cincinnati’s running game changes the conversation
Cole Tabb ran for 173 yards and a touchdown in Cincinnati’s 37-24 win over Texas Tech, while JC French IV threw four touchdown passes. The Bearcats finished with 252 rushing yards at 6.1 yards per carry after a difficult opening quarter in the 37-24 win. That combination gave Cincinnati scoring threats through the air and on the ground.
The response after Texas Tech cut the lead to 24-15 was useful, too. Cincinnati went 80 yards in nine plays for another touchdown rather than letting the game close around it. Tabb later broke a 58-yard touchdown run. The Bearcats’ case against another ranked opponent begins with that ability to keep producing after the opposition answers.
Utah can answer with Dampier and its defense
Utah beat Houston 21-13 after falling behind 10-0 in the third quarter. Dampier ran for two touchdowns and threw for 204 yards, although his two interceptions complicated the night. A late sack and fumble recovery gave Utah the ball at the Houston 9, setting up Dampier’s final touchdown run in the 21-13 victory.
That win showed a way through a difficult offensive game, but a slow start and giveaways would make this road assignment harder. Cincinnati has just demonstrated that it can follow its rushing production with touchdown passes and sustained scoring drives.
Our grades give both offenses B+ marks, with Utah’s defense at A- compared with Cincinnati’s B. The rushing projections are fairly close: about 198 yards for Utah and 183 for Cincinnati. We project roughly 249 passing yards for the Utes against 211 for the Bearcats, within total-yardage outlooks of about 446 and 394. Utah has the larger expected output, while Cincinnati’s ground-game outlook keeps its main offensive route relevant.
Utah is 7-0 outright and has covered six of seven games this season. Cincinnati is 5-2 with four covers in seven. The Utes have regularly done more than simply win, but Cincinnati’s latest performance offers a specific matchup challenge beyond those records.

Two recent games, different scoring stories
The 56.5-point total sits between very different recent examples. Utah’s Houston win involved a scoreless first half for the Utes and decisive late defense. Cincinnati’s Texas Tech win featured four touchdown passes from French and several long gains. Five of seven Bearcats games have gone Over this season, compared with four of seven Utah games.
The scoring case depends on whether Cincinnati can keep its offense balanced against Utah’s stronger defensive evaluation, and whether the Utes can start more cleanly than they did against Houston. There is room for both attacks to generate yardage, but Cincinnati’s recent output has also varied sharply: it scored seven at Arizona and 42 at West Virginia before beating Texas Tech. The latest win deserves attention without becoming the only version of this offense readers consider.
Utah’s defensive advantage and broader projected production give the favorite a supported case. Cincinnati’s rushing success makes that case work harder. The clearest test is whether the Bearcats can continue building drives on the ground, and whether Utah can avoid another game of catch-up and costly interceptions.
