Lambeau Field gives Wisconsin a familiar backdrop. The betting market gives the Badgers very little else.
Wisconsin vs Notre Dame is one of the headline games of opening weekend: a primetime neutral-site meeting, a top-four opponent and the first real look at a rebuilt Badgers roster. Notre Dame was a 20.5-point favorite in our DraftKings snapshot, with a total of 46.5. That price makes the central question clear: can Wisconsin create enough disruption to keep the night competitive?
The teams meet Sunday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. It is their first matchup since Notre Dame pulled away for a 41–13 win at Soldier Field in 2021.
Wisconsin’s new offense gets an immediate stress test
Wisconsin added 34 transfers and more than 50 new players overall. The most important arrival is quarterback Colton Joseph, the 2025 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year at Old Dominion. He was one of only two FBS quarterbacks last season to throw for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000.
That dual-threat profile gives the Badgers a way to create plays when the initial structure breaks down. It also has to function against a Notre Dame defense with experienced playmakers at every level.
The Irish return eight defensive starters. Edge rusher Boubacar Traore produced 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss last season, while cornerback Leonard Moore enters 2026 with seven career interceptions and 20 starts. Notre Dame’s official depth chart also lists veteran safeties Adon Shuler and Brauntae Johnson behind a front that added Power Four transfer help.
The Sharpest Bets grades frame the challenge: Wisconsin carries a B offense grade, while Notre Dame’s defense is graded B+. Joseph’s mobility can change individual downs, but Wisconsin must show that a newly assembled offense can sustain drives against a deep, experienced unit.
The Badgers’ best answer is on defense
Wisconsin’s offense is the unknown. Its defense offers the more established case for resistance.
Sophomore linebackers Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano combined for 117 tackles last season. Posa earned Freshman All-America honors, and both moved into the starting lineup late in 2025. The secondary was reinforced with Arizona State transfer Javan Robinson, who started 26 consecutive games before arriving in Madison, and Missouri safety Marvin Burks Jr.
That returning core helps explain Wisconsin’s A− defensive grade. It meets the strongest unit in the matchup: Notre Dame’s offense carries an A.
Quarterback CJ Carr is the stabilizer. Among returning 2025 FBS passers, Notre Dame’s official game notes place him first in yards per completion and second in yards per attempt, touchdown rate and touchdown-to-interception ratio. The backfield is less settled after Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price became first-round NFL draft picks, with Aneyas Williams listed atop the opening depth chart.
Wisconsin’s chance to shorten the game starts here. If Posa and Catalano can limit early-down efficiency and force Carr into obvious passing situations, the Badgers can make Notre Dame earn the margin the market expects.

Recent form points in opposite directions
Notre Dame closed the 2025 regular season with ten consecutive victories, all by double digits. Wisconsin’s final ten games produced a 2–8 record.
The betting results add useful context. Wisconsin went 5–5 against the spread in those ten games, and nine finished under the closing total stored in our data. Notre Dame went 6–4 against the spread, while its totals split 5–5.
Those numbers are descriptive, not predictive. Both teams open a new season, and Wisconsin’s turnover-heavy roster is especially different from the one that produced last year’s results. Still, the contrast helps explain why the spread is so large—and why the total remains modest for a game involving a heavily favored team.
Wisconsin vs Notre Dame odds: a big spread, a modest total
Our DraftKings snapshot showed Notre Dame −20.5 and a total of 46.5. The broader market was tightly grouped, with the Irish available at either −20.5 or −21 across the books in our feed.
That combination leaves little room for Wisconsin offensively. A low-possession game can help a large underdog stay inside the number, but empty drives become more expensive when the opponent is expected to control the game. Notre Dame, meanwhile, can be clearly superior without covering if its reworked backfield or offensive line needs time to settle.

Lambeau supplies the stage and Wisconsin’s defense supplies the upset argument. Notre Dame supplies the more proven quarterback, the deeper roster and a ten-game winning streak. The most revealing stretch may come early: whether Joseph can turn improvisation into first downs, and whether the Badgers’ linebackers can prevent Carr from keeping the Irish offense on schedule.
