Can Charlotte’s shooting revival hold up against Washington?

Charlotte’s last two games showed just how different this team can look when its threes fall. Now the Hornets are 2.5-point favorites against Washington, and their scoring rebound faces another test without Coby White and Kon Knueppel. Both teams enter at 2-1 after Saturday wins, but Washington’s productive attack gives Charlotte more to worry about than simply keeping its own shots falling.

A rebound worth examining, not simply trusting

Brandon Miller scored 34 points as Charlotte beat Miami 115-110 on Saturday. That followed a six-point outing in Friday’s 128-81 loss to Atlanta. The team’s outside shooting swung with him: the Hornets went from 11-for-51 on threes against Atlanta to 16-for-43 against Miami.

Saturday wasn’t just Miller rescuing the scoring. Dennis Schroder added 25 points, Naz Reid had 23 and Grayson Allen scored 20. That spread of production gives Charlotte something useful to build on, particularly with White out because of a calf injury and Knueppel ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Our grades capture the tension in this matchup: we rate Charlotte’s offense an F, but Washington’s defense a D-. The Hornets have an inviting opponent against which to build on Saturday’s performance, even if one strong shooting night leaves plenty to prove.

Washington can make Charlotte work for its favorite status

The Wizards bring more than the same record. Trae Young had 25 points and nine assists in Washington’s 124-120 win at Chicago on Saturday, while Kyshawn George added 22 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Davis scored 19. Washington turned that game with a 40-20 third quarter, showing how quickly its scoring can change the picture.

We give Washington’s offense a B, matching Charlotte’s B defensive grade. That’s the more competitive strength-on-strength matchup here: the Wizards have a credible scoring case, but the Hornets’ defense is the strongest unit in our assessment of Charlotte. Washington will again be without AJ Dybantsa, who has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

Our rebounding projections also give Washington a modest advantage, at about 47 boards to Charlotte’s 44. That offers another useful comparison beyond the shooting swings. How those rebounds divide between ending Charlotte possessions and extending Washington’s own will matter more than the headline gap.

What matters around a 228.5 total

The posted total of 228.5 puts Charlotte’s offensive consistency under the microscope. Missing White and Knueppel makes Saturday’s contributions from Schroder, Reid and Allen particularly relevant. Washington’s weak defensive grade gives the Hornets room to sustain that rebound, while Charlotte’s stronger defense offers resistance to a Wizards team that just scored 124. The scoring outlook hinges on both matchups, not simply whether Miller stays hot.

The historical betting results pull in different directions, too. Over the past year, 54 of 85 Charlotte games went under, producing a profit of 17.92 units from flat one-unit under bets. Washington games went over in 47 of 83, returning 6.66 units on the same basis. Those opposing histories bring different scoring profiles into the discussion, but neither settles the question at today’s total.

The matchup’s pressure point

Charlotte’s clearest route is to pair its better-rated defense with another balanced scoring effort, rather than needing Miller to repeat his 34-point night. Washington’s counterweight is a stronger-rated attack and a small projected rebounding edge. For a short favorite, the key test is whether Schroder, Reid and Allen can sustain enough of Saturday’s support to keep Charlotte from relying on another Miller outburst. Washington’s defensive struggles create that opportunity; the Hornets’ missing guards make it harder to take for granted.
