Wizards vs. Bulls preview: Can Washington clean up the costly mistakes?

Washington has enough scoring talent to make its narrow-favorite status in Chicago understandable. Keeping that talent from going to waste is the bigger question. The Wizards committed 23 turnovers and were badly beaten on the offensive glass Friday, while the Bulls bounced back from a rough opener by scoring 132 points in Milwaukee. With both teams playing on consecutive days, Saturday’s matchup tests whether Washington can clean up its possessions against a Chicago team that just found its scoring touch.

Washington needs more from its possessions

Trae Young delivered 22 points and 12 assists in Washington’s 112-102 loss to Toronto on Friday. Anthony Davis had a much tougher night: nine points on 3-for-12 shooting after scoring 34 in the season-opening win. Toronto also outscored Washington 52-32 in the paint and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to the Wizards’ six.

That leaves Washington with two concrete areas to improve: protecting the ball and finishing defensive possessions. Our turnover projections put the Wizards at about 14, a substantial improvement on Friday’s 23. Chicago is also projected for about 14, so we expect a much more even turnover matchup rather than another night with Washington repeatedly giving possessions away.

The rebounding comparison is less favorable for the visitors. We project about 45 rebounds for Chicago and 42 for Washington. That’s a useful counterweight to our stronger assessment of the Wizards’ offense: we give Washington a B- there, compared with Chicago’s C. The projection covers total rebounds, but Friday’s offensive-rebound deficit shows why ending Chicago’s possessions deserves particular attention. Better scoring options won’t help as much if the Bulls keep getting second chances.

Chicago’s rebound meets a demanding total

The Bulls’ 132-125 win over Milwaukee on Friday was a sharp turnaround from their 135-92 opening loss in Toronto. Norman Powell scored 25 points, Caleb Wilson added 21, and Jalen Smith supplied 14 points and 13 rebounds. Chicago got meaningful production from several places rather than relying on one scorer.

The current DraftKings lines make Washington a 1.5-point favorite and set the total at 245.5. Our D- defensive grades for both teams support the possibility of a high-scoring matchup. Chicago just allowed 125 points even in victory, and Washington’s latest game exposed problems around the basket.

Still, 245.5 asks for considerable scoring, and the early offensive results have been uneven. Across their first two games this season, Chicago jumped from 92 points to 132, while Washington went from 128 to 102. Each team had one over and one under against its respective game totals. The weak defensive evaluations support the scoring outlook, but neither offense has shown steady production across this short opening stretch. Chicago’s balanced scoring Friday is encouraging; Davis’ drop-off is a reminder of how quickly that picture can change.

The matchup comes back to the glass

Washington’s stronger offensive grade is the clearest point in its favor, but Chicago’s projected rebounding edge and balanced scoring Friday make the small spread a demanding test. The key is whether the Wizards can improve both parts of the possession equation: fewer turnovers would preserve their own opportunities, while better defensive rebounding would limit Chicago’s. Cleaning up only one leaves the Bulls a way to offset Washington’s offensive advantage. At the high total, the defensive concerns are meaningful, but the uneven scoring starts make it risky to assume Friday’s Chicago output will become the norm.
