49ers vs. Rams Preview: Breaking Down the Spread in Melbourne

The 49ers and Rams know each other well, but almost everything surrounding their Week 1 meeting will feel different. They open the season at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in what NFL.com describes as the league’s first game in Australia, turning a familiar NFC West matchup into a neutral-site test.

Los Angeles is the designated home team and was listed as a 3.5-point favorite in the supplied DraftKings snapshot. Without a conventional home-field setting, however, the question is whether the Rams’ stronger graded profile justifies laying more than a field goal.

Why the Rams are favored

Our grades give both offenses an A, but Los Angeles has the stronger complete profile. The Rams carry an A- overall grade and a B+ on defense, compared with a B+ overall grade and B defense for San Francisco.

Our team projections show a similar edge without making the matchup look one-sided. Los Angeles is projected for 366.7 total yards, while San Francisco is at 333.5. The largest separation is in the passing outlook: 254.9 yards for Matthew Stafford and the Rams against 233.2 for Brock Purdy and the 49ers.

That expected production gives Los Angeles a credible route to controlling the game through Stafford and a depth-chart receiving group led by Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. It does not automatically make Rams -3.5 attractive, especially when the favorite must clear a field goal at a neutral venue.

How San Francisco can keep it close

San Francisco’s A offensive grade is the clearest argument against treating this as a mismatch. Christian McCaffrey remains atop the supplied backfield depth chart, and our projections call for 26.8 rushing attempts and 100.3 rushing yards from the 49ers. A balanced workload would reduce how much the offense must ask of Purdy through the air.

George Kittle’s availability could affect that balance. As of the Sept. 9 review, Kittle was questionable after being limited Tuesday with an Achilles issue, according to reporting attributed in the packet to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also limited and questionable with a finger injury.

Defensive availability adds uncertainty

The 49ers ruled out defensive end Mykel Williams, while Nick Bosa was limited Tuesday and listed as questionable with a knee injury. Several other San Francisco defenders also carried questionable designations in the Sept. 9 snapshot.

Los Angeles has significant questions of its own. The Rams said Aaron Donald would not travel to Melbourne, while ESPN’s Sarah Barshop reported that Myles Garrett and Jaylen Watson missed Tuesday’s practice with knee and toe injuries, respectively. Both were listed as questionable in the packet.

Those statuses matter to the spread because the market already asks Los Angeles to win by more than a field goal. They also complicate the total: both offenses grade well, but the final defensive personnel picture was not settled at review time.

What the spread and total are asking

The primary market question is whether the Rams can create enough separation to cover -3.5. Their overall grade, defensive grade and projected yardage edge support their position as favorites. San Francisco’s offensive grade and the neutral setting make the extra half-point beyond a field goal the central complication.

The 48.5 total is the secondary decision. The two A offensive grades support the possibility of a productive opener, but the available evidence does not produce a strong public signal. Our side and total strength ratings are both one star, indicating limited conviction in each market without revealing the selections behind them.

What to watch before kickoff

Los Angeles enters with the more complete graded profile, while San Francisco has enough offensive quality to challenge the number. The most useful remaining information will be the final availability of players such as Kittle, Bosa, Garrett and Watson, along with any updated spread or total. Those developments should be evaluated as a new snapshot rather than blended with the Sept. 9 market.
