76ers at Hornets: Charlotte’s scoring slump meets Philadelphia’s late-game execution

Philadelphia keeps finding ways to win, while Charlotte is struggling to score enough to give itself a chance. The 76ers beat New York 98-93 on Friday behind late baskets from LeBron James and VJ Edgecombe; the Hornets managed just 79 points in Washington. With Philadelphia favored by only 1.5 points Saturday, the matchup asks how much Charlotte can improve its offense against a team already comfortable closing tight games.

Philadelphia’s finish carries more weight than the score

Tyrese Maxey scored 27 points against the Knicks, and James added 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. James hit the go-ahead shot with 1:10 left, Edgecombe followed with a 3-pointer and James helped seal the win with a tip-in. That sequence supplied a specific answer when New York briefly took the lead late.

The Sixers are 5-1, but just 3-3 against the spread. Their five-point win at Indiana on Wednesday didn’t cover, while Friday’s win came as an underdog. The strong record supports Philadelphia’s case, but it hasn’t made every spread comfortable. Saturday’s small number puts the focus on who can execute well enough to win the closing possessions.

Maxey’s points threshold is 29.5, above his 27-point performance Friday. His latest total offers context for that sportsbook line, rather than a prop recommendation. His scoring remains central to Philadelphia’s attack, alongside the late contribution James just provided.

Charlotte needs more than another competitive start

The Hornets led Washington by 10 in the first quarter Friday, then finished with a 95-79 loss. They shot 29.7% from the field and scored only 13 points in the third quarter. Brandon Miller led them with 19 points, while Naz Reid had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Starting well wasn’t enough to sustain the offense.

Charlotte has scored 79 and 89 points in its last two games, and its earlier 81-point night against Atlanta shows that Friday wasn’t an isolated low. There have been better performances: the Hornets scored 110 against Washington and 115 against Miami in consecutive wins. Those games provide a concrete route back to competitiveness, but the latest shooting and scoring give Charlotte considerably more to fix.

Our attacking grades underline the contrast, A for Philadelphia against D- for Charlotte. The defensive comparison points the other way, with Charlotte graded B and Philadelphia C+. That gives the home side a counterweight if it can recover enough offense to use it. Miller’s points market is set at 27.5, a demanding step up from his 19 on Friday and another reason to distinguish available scoring potential from what Charlotte has recently delivered.

Availability also deserves attention on the second night of a back-to-back for both teams. Jaylen Brown missed Friday with left knee soreness; the AP reported that Philadelphia hadn’t said whether he would miss more games. Charlotte played Friday without Kon Knueppel because of a hamstring injury and Coby White because of a calf injury. Their status for Saturday remains unresolved in those reports.

The total reflects more than two low-scoring games

The total is 215.5. All six Charlotte games this season have gone Under, as have five of Philadelphia’s six. That history fits the Hornets’ scoring struggles and the Sixers’ latest 98-point win, but it comes from earlier prices. Charlotte’s previous total against Washington was 218.5, while Philadelphia’s against New York was 224.5. Saturday already presents a lower scoring threshold.

Charlotte’s ability to sustain possessions is a useful part of that assessment. Our turnover projections put the Hornets at about 16 against 12 for Philadelphia. That projected gap favors the Sixers’ ability to avoid wasted trips, though it doesn’t by itself establish a fast or slow game. The higher-scoring countercase rests on Philadelphia’s A attacking grade and Charlotte producing something closer to its 110- and 115-point wins. Another Hornets shooting collapse would leave Philadelphia carrying more of the scoring load.

Philadelphia brings the clearer offensive case and the strongest recent closing sequence. Charlotte’s better defensive grade gives it a way to compete, but its own scoring recovery is the factor that matters most to the short spread and the total. Check availability alongside the price before deciding how much improvement Charlotte needs to make this competitive.
