Kansas City opens its 2026 season as a short home favorite over Denver, but the spread asks bettors to balance current expectations against two very different finishes to last season. The Chiefs hold a modest edge in our offensive projections, while the Broncos bring the stronger recent results.
Broncos vs. Chiefs game details and current odds
The Broncos and Chiefs meet Monday, Sept. 14, at 8:15 p.m. EDT at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Both teams enter Week 1 at 0-0.
The latest DraftKings line has Kansas City favored by 2.5 points at -115, with Denver +2.5 at -105. The total is 43.5, priced at -115 to the over and -105 to the under.
Why the short spread is interesting
Denver went 8-2 across its last 10 games, although its 5-5 record against the spread was far less dominant. Kansas City went 2-8 over the same late-season stretch and covered two of nine games with an available spread result.
The Broncos also won both meetings last season. They beat Kansas City 22-19 at home in November and 20-13 at Arrowhead in December. That gives Denver relevant recent history in the matchup, but a new season can quickly change the picture.
Our projections provide the clearest case for Kansas City’s status as the favorite. With Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix leading the two offenses, we project about 230 passing yards and 344 total yards for Kansas City. Denver comes in around 209 passing yards and 316 total yards. That’s a meaningful offensive-volume advantage for the home team, even if it isn’t large enough to make a short spread feel automatic.
There’s also a fresh personnel issue to monitor on the Kansas City defense. Defensive tackle Chris Jones is questionable with a calf injury after being limited in Friday’s practice. His status matters against a Denver offense trying to avoid obvious passing situations on the road.
The total carries its own uncertainty
Kansas City’s final 10 games from last season leaned heavily toward lower scoring, with nine unders. Denver had five unders and four overs among nine games with a graded total. Both Broncos-Chiefs meetings also stayed under their closing totals.
That history helps explain why 43.5 is an important dividing line, but the side and total each carry a one-star strength rating. This looks more like a matchup to keep watching than one demanding an aggressive position.

How the matchup comes together
Kansas City’s case starts with its projected advantage in passing and overall yardage at home. Denver counters with a much better recent record and two low-scoring wins over the Chiefs last season. At only 2.5 points, there isn’t much room for either team to stumble through its opener.
