Flyers vs. Lightning preview: Can Philadelphia find enough scoring?

Philadelphia’s biggest challenge against Tampa Bay on Monday night is finding enough scoring to make its defensive work count. Our grades give the Flyers a much stronger mark for defending than attacking, while the Lightning rate well at both ends. Philadelphia has a route to a competitive game, but it needs to generate enough threatening chances against the stronger all-around team.

Philadelphia’s stronger half has to carry some weight

Our Flyers grades pair a B for defense with a D+ for offense. Tampa Bay has an A- defensive grade and a B+ offensive grade, so Philadelphia faces a difficult scoring matchup even if it holds up well in its own end.

The Flyers’ latest result illustrates that tension: they lost 3–2 to Carolina on Saturday. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, beat Washington 3–1 that same night. Those individual results offer a little context, but the more useful matchup distinction is Philadelphia’s uneven profile. Its clearest route to an upset is keeping Tampa Bay within reach and making the most of a smaller supply of chances.

A shot advantage, not an overwhelming gap

Our shot projections put Tampa Bay at roughly 28 and Philadelphia at 24. That’s a meaningful edge in opportunity for the Lightning, though it leaves room for finishing and saves to shape the result. Shot volume favors Tampa Bay; how productive those shots become is the key uncertainty.

We also project about 27 faceoff wins for Philadelphia compared with 25 for Tampa Bay. That narrower advantage could give the Flyers a few more chances to start with possession, but it doesn’t erase the tougher scoring matchup. Winning draws will matter most if Philadelphia turns those possessions into useful chances.

The favorite’s price asks for more than stronger grades

DraftKings’ moneyline prices have Tampa Bay at -205 and Philadelphia at +170. The Lightning’s stronger grades and projected shot edge help explain their favorite status. Still, backing Tampa Bay at that price means risking $205 to win $100, so simply identifying the stronger team isn’t enough to establish an attractive bet.

The total is 5.5 goals. Philadelphia’s limited attacking grade and Tampa Bay’s strong defensive mark make the Flyers’ scoring contribution especially important to that number. Saturday’s results fit a restrained scoring picture, but two games alone aren’t enough to settle the outlook.

Tampa Bay has the clearer all-around case: stronger grades at both ends and a projected advantage in shots. Philadelphia’s defensive grade is the strongest counterweight, with its modest faceoff edge offering another way to build possessions. The deciding question for the Flyers is what they do with those opportunities. Keeping the Lightning within reach only helps if Philadelphia creates enough threatening chances of its own—and Tampa Bay’s moneyline price makes that distinction important for bettors.
