The Rangers have three straight wins behind them, while the Islanders arrive fresh off a 6-0 victory. That makes Tuesday’s matchup more interesting than a simple favorite-versus-underdog story: the Rangers have the stronger early results, but our projections give the Islanders a modest edge in shots. Turning that extra volume into scoring pressure is the Islanders’ clearest route to challenging their favored neighbors.
The recent wins came with different tests
The Rangers are 3-1, and they’ve allowed just three goals across their three consecutive victories. Their latest was a 4-2 win over Utah on October 4, when Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves and J.T. Miller scored a third-period goal. That’s a useful foundation for the favorite: the Rangers have been getting results without needing every game to become a scoring race.
The Islanders’ October 3 win was more explosive. Six different players scored against New Jersey, and Matthew Schaefer had two assists, including the setup for Bo Horvat’s power-play goal. Still, Ilya Sorokin needed 36 saves to complete the 6-0 shutout. The six-goal margin was impressive, but the workload in net matters too: that result wasn’t simply a case of keeping New Jersey from generating shots. The Islanders are 1-1, so there’s still a small sample behind their strong latest result.
The Rangers also have a personnel loss: center Joe Veleno is out with a lower-body injury, reducing their available forward depth. There’s no established replacement or specific line adjustment to build into the matchup analysis.
A favorite, but not a clear shot-volume advantage
DraftKings’ moneyline odds make the Rangers a -155 favorite and the Islanders a +130 underdog. In plain terms, a $155 Rangers wager would return $100 in profit if they win, while a $100 Islanders wager would return $130. The Rangers’ recent results give bettors a reason to take their favorite status seriously; the more useful question is how much separation this matchup really offers.

Our grades put both teams at C+ overall and B defensively. The Rangers have a small attacking edge, with a C grade compared with the Islanders’ C-. Yet our shot projections call for roughly 28 Islanders shots to 25 for the Rangers. That gives the underdog a plausible route into the game through shot volume, even with the slightly weaker attacking grade.
The distinction is conversion. More shots would give the Islanders more opportunities, but the Rangers’ recent ability to limit goals is the strongest counterweight. The Islanders need to make that projected volume count; the Rangers need to keep those opportunities from becoming the kind of varied scoring the Islanders produced Saturday.
What matters most
The Rangers’ winning streak and low goals allowed give their favorite status a credible foundation. But the matching overall grades and the Islanders’ projected shot edge leave a real challenge for the Rangers: limiting the damage even if they’re outshot. For the Islanders, generating volume is only the first step. Whether those opportunities become meaningful scoring pressure matters more than the shot count alone.
