NC State vs. Stanford: Can the Cardinal build on Ford’s big night?

Micah Ford gave Stanford something to build on with four rushing touchdowns against Elon. Now comes the tougher question: how much of that improvement carries over against NC State? Our projections give the Wolfpack an advantage on the ground, but their own uneven results—and Stanford’s more competitive passing outlook—make this more interesting than a straightforward bounce-back assignment.

Ford’s big game comes with an important distinction

Stanford beat Elon 34-7 on Saturday behind Ford’s four rushing touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring run. His touchdown total tied the school’s single-game record. It was a welcome response after Stanford scored just three points against Wake Forest and seven against Notre Dame in consecutive losses.

Elon is an FCS opponent, though, so that win offers a promising starting point rather than a clean measure of Stanford’s chances here. Our rushing projections put the Cardinal at about 100 yards against NC State, compared with roughly 140 for the Wolfpack. That’s a more restrained ground-game outlook than Ford’s latest highlight might suggest.

Stanford still has a plausible route to a competitive game: we project its passing output around 245 yards, slightly ahead of NC State’s roughly 230. The broader yardage comparison is also fairly close—about 370 for NC State and 345 for Stanford—rather than a picture of one team overwhelming the other. Stanford also beat Georgia Tech 34-27 before those two heavy losses, so Elon wasn’t its only productive offensive outing this season. The challenge is finding that level more consistently.

NC State has an edge to establish, not assume

NC State is a 6.5-point favorite at DraftKings, a price that puts the focus on whether its projected ground advantage can translate into enough separation. The Wolfpack arrive at 3-3, and their recent results give reasons for both confidence and caution: they lost 38-14 to Wake Forest in their last game on October 10, after beating Louisville 31-28 and Appalachian State 41-31. There’s enough scoring ability in those wins to test Stanford’s defense, but the latest loss is a meaningful counterweight.

Neither team has rewarded spread bettors consistently this season: NC State has covered in two of six games, while Stanford has covered in two of seven. Stanford’s comfortable win over Elon still fell short of its 33.5-point spread. That’s useful context for Friday’s price: an outright win and a successful bet against the spread have been different things for both teams.

Why the 55.5 total needs a closer look

Five of Stanford’s seven games and four of NC State’s six have gone over their totals this season. But Stanford’s results show why those records need context. Its 57-3 loss to Wake Forest and 58-7 loss to Notre Dame both went over, with most of the scoring coming from the opposition. Saturday’s offensive rebound against Elon stayed under.

At 55.5, the scoring outlook isn’t simply a matter of both attacks rolling. Stanford’s heavy losses show how much its defensive struggles can contribute to a high-scoring game, and NC State’s recent 31- and 41-point performances suggest it can take advantage. The Wolfpack’s 14-point showing against Wake Forest and our modest Stanford rushing projection pull the other way. Stanford’s passing outlook offers a way to contribute, but its uneven scoring makes the season over records less straightforward than they first appear.

The key test is Stanford’s follow-through

NC State’s projected rushing advantage gives the favorite a concrete strength to lean on, but Stanford’s passing outlook keeps the overall yardage gap manageable. The Cardinal’s best answer is a more balanced contribution around Ford, rather than needing another four-touchdown performance from him. For the spread, the key is whether NC State can turn its ground advantage into separation despite its own scoring swings. For the total, Stanford’s defensive results matter just as much as whether its offensive rebound lasts. That combination makes Ford’s follow-through important without making his last game the whole story.
