Colorado has the stronger attack in our grades, but Tampa Bay brings the better start—and a goalie coming off a busy, effective night. That makes Friday’s Lightning-Avalanche matchup more interesting than a simple comparison of records. Colorado’s expected shooting advantage gives the favorite a credible case, while Tampa Bay’s recent scoring and Andrei Vasilevskiy’s work in net give bettors good reasons to look beyond it.
Colorado’s case as a modest favorite
The latest DraftKings moneyline has Colorado at -125 and Tampa Bay at +105, a modest lean toward the Avalanche rather than a wide gap. Tampa Bay is 7-2 and has won three straight, while Colorado sits at 5-4-1 after losing three of its last four games.
The Lightning’s latest win was emphatic: they beat Vegas 6-2 on Tuesday, with Anthony Cirelli scoring twice and Nikita Kucherov adding a goal and two assists. Vasilevskiy stopped 32 shots. Colorado, meanwhile, lost 4-3 at New Jersey, with Artturi Lehkonen scoring twice late after the Avalanche fell behind 4-1.
Our analysis gives Colorado the stronger attacking outlook: an A+ offensive grade against Tampa Bay’s A-. In our shot projections, the Avalanche come in at roughly 33 and the Lightning at 29. That gives Colorado a plausible route to justifying its favorite status through more shooting volume, though the gap doesn’t tell us how dangerous those shots will be.
Tampa Bay’s winning start also offers a useful pricing lesson. Flat one-unit moneyline bets on the Lightning this season have returned a profit of 1.74 units across nine games, with seven wins. They’ve been successful, but the prices paid along the way help explain why a strong record doesn’t tell the whole story about betting returns.
The goalie contrast matters at 6.5
The expected goalie matchup provides a meaningful counterweight to Colorado’s shooting edge. Across their five most recent appearances this season, Vasilevskiy has a .901 save percentage, compared with Mackenzie Blackwood’s .878. Vasilevskiy’s latest outing—32 saves on 34 shots against Vegas—also gives Tampa Bay a recent example of winning comfortably while its goalie handles a substantial workload.
Blackwood has had better nights within that stretch, including 30 saves on 32 shots against Pittsburgh. Still, his five-appearance results leave Colorado with more to prove in net. We give both teams an A- defensive grade, so our broader team evaluations are closer than those recent goalie numbers suggest.

That tension is useful when assessing the sportsbook total of 6.5. Colorado’s highly rated attack and projected shooting volume point to scoring pressure, while Tampa Bay has scored 14 goals during its three-game winning streak. Blackwood’s recent results add another reason to take the offensive threats seriously.
There’s a counterweight, though: the teams’ recent scoring results point in different directions. Five of Tampa Bay’s nine games this season have finished under their posted totals, compared with six overs in Colorado’s 10 games. Those results came against different thresholds and opponents. Alongside Vasilevskiy’s recent performance, they make a stronger case for examining the goalie matchup than simply carrying Tuesday’s scoring into Friday.
What matters most
Colorado’s stronger attacking evaluation and expected edge in shots make its modest favorite status understandable. Tampa Bay’s answer is more than a winning record: its recent scoring has come alongside a better five-appearance save percentage from its expected goalie. The distinction that matters is between Colorado generating more shots and turning that volume into enough production to justify the price. Vasilevskiy’s ability to absorb that workload is the clearest challenge to Colorado’s case, while Blackwood’s recent results keep Tampa Bay’s attack central to the discussion at 6.5.
