Middle Tennessee has won its last two games by three points apiece, while Kennesaw State has lost six straight. That makes the Blue Raiders the team with momentum, but a narrow favorite still has to earn its separation. With Middle Tennessee favored by 2.5 points, the interesting question is whether its recent knack for finishing close games can carry it through another matchup that our yardage projections suggest could be competitive.
Two tight wins give Middle Tennessee something to build on
The Blue Raiders’ back-to-back wins came against Delaware, 33-30, and Florida International, 26-23 last Tuesday. At 4-3, they’ve put themselves in a much stronger position than the 1-6 Owls. They’ve also covered the spread in five of seven games this season; historical flat one-unit bets on Middle Tennessee against the spread returned about 2.57 units over those seven games.
The FIU win offers a useful picture of how Middle Tennessee got there. Terrence Brown ran for 158 yards and a touchdown, and Dominic Bourgeois made four field goals in the win. Middle Tennessee then used an 11-play, 71-yard drive to run out the clock after FIU pulled within three. That’s tangible evidence of a team completing a tight win, though needing four field goals also shows how much of its scoring came from possessions that stopped short of touchdowns.
Kennesaw State needs a response after Liberty
The Owls fell 34-6 to Liberty on Thursday and didn’t score a touchdown. An interception gave Liberty a short field for a third-quarter field goal, and Kennesaw State was also stopped on a fourth-and-1. Turning possessions into points is an immediate concern after that performance.
Still, the losing streak includes a 27-26 defeat to Jacksonville State and a 24-21 loss at Missouri State. Those close results help explain why the records alone aren’t enough to dismiss this matchup. Our projections have Kennesaw State at about 395 total yards and Middle Tennessee at about 390, with roughly 150 rushing yards for the Owls and 140 for the Blue Raiders. That gives Kennesaw State a plausible route to a more competitive night through sustained offensive production. It also puts the focus on what those yards produce, especially after last week’s touchdown drought.

The 50.5 total brings two different recent patterns together
Six of Kennesaw State’s seven games this season have finished Under their respective totals. Middle Tennessee’s last three have all gone Over, including its 55-0 loss at Kansas before the two close wins. That sequence matters: the Blue Raiders’ recent Over results haven’t all come from their own scoring success.
Against today’s 50.5 total, Kennesaw State’s scoring struggles pull in one direction, while Middle Tennessee’s back-to-back games with at least 26 points and at least 23 conceded pull in the other. Our yardage projections leave room for both teams to move the ball, but Middle Tennessee’s field-goal-heavy win and the Owls’ six-point outing make the quality of those possessions the more useful question. Neither recent betting pattern settles how often these teams will finish drives with touchdowns tonight.
What matters most
Middle Tennessee brings the stronger recent results and a demonstrated ability to close out a one-score game. Kennesaw State’s close losses and competitive yardage outlook are the counterweight. The Blue Raiders have the clearer recent case, but their ability to get touchdowns from productive possessions will matter if they’re to create breathing room; the Owls need to turn a plausible yardage performance into a much better scoring night.
