Thunder’s unbeaten start meets Flagg and two key availability questions

Oklahoma City has kept winning as its available personnel have changed, but the next test comes with another complication: Ajay Mitchell is questionable after scoring 30 points in Monday’s win. Dallas has its own scoring question with Kyrie Irving questionable, even as Cooper Flagg comes off a standout performance. The Thunder’s 4-0 start gives them the stronger recent case, while being a 6.5-point favorite asks them to do more than simply keep that record intact.

The Thunder found answers against Phoenix

Mitchell’s career-high 30 points helped Oklahoma City beat Phoenix 125-114 on Monday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 26, Jared McCain scored 18, and Isaiah Hartenstein finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. That spread of contributions is the encouraging part of the latest win: the Thunder got meaningful production beyond their leading guard.

Repeating that combination is less straightforward tonight. Mitchell is questionable with an ankle injury, while Chet Holmgren is out with a knee injury and Alex Caruso won’t play because of an ankle injury. Mitchell’s status matters especially after Monday’s scoring contribution. The Thunder have already shown they can win with absences, but Mitchell’s uncertain availability changes how much weight to put on their latest offensive performance.

Oklahoma City has covered the spread in three of its first four games. The exception was a 108-101 win over the Clippers as a 16.5-point favorite, a useful reminder that its unbeaten record and its betting results answer different questions. Tonight’s smaller spread still requires enough separation against a Dallas team coming off a win of its own.

Flagg gives Dallas a concrete counterweight

Flagg scored 29 points and handed out 11 assists in Monday’s 113-109 win at Miami. He scored 12 in the fourth quarter and blocked Andrew Wiggins’ three-point attempt with 31 seconds left, protecting a two-point lead. Dallas got both late scoring and a decisive defensive play from him.

Irving added 18 points in that win, but he’s questionable with a knee injury for this matchup. His availability is an important part of judging whether Dallas can sustain the supporting scoring around Flagg. The Mavericks are 2-2, with a 121-105 win at Indiana alongside the Miami result, so they’ve already shown a route to winning beyond one close finish.

Our projections have Dallas committing about 14 turnovers to Oklahoma City’s 12. That puts protecting possessions on the Mavericks’ watch list: Flagg’s playmaking was a strength Monday, and Dallas would benefit from keeping those possessions available to its offense. The projected difference favors the Thunder on ball security without settling how large a lead either team can build.

A 228.5 total with important scoring questions

Three of each team’s first four games have finished Under their respective totals. Dallas’ last three have all done so, returning about 2.73 units from historical flat one-unit Under bets across those three games. That’s useful recent context, though the scoring contributions available tonight deserve more weight than the streak alone.

Oklahoma City’s 125-point performance against Phoenix is the clearest recent counterweight to a lower-scoring outlook, and Gilgeous-Alexander and McCain both contributed substantially. But Mitchell’s 30 points were part of that result, just as Irving’s 18 helped Dallas win in Miami. Against the posted 228.5, the availability of those two guards affects how comfortably either offense can be expected to carry its latest performance forward.

What deserves the most weight

The Thunder bring four wins, several productive contributors and a favorable ball-security outlook. Dallas brings Flagg’s demonstrated ability to create and finish a close win, with Irving’s status a key condition on the supporting offense. Oklahoma City has earned its stronger recent standing; whether it can turn that into comfortable separation depends in part on sustaining the scoring support it found Monday. Check Mitchell and Irving’s availability before relying too heavily on either team’s latest result.
