Pistons–Nets: Detroit’s Defense Meets a More Competitive Brooklyn

Detroit’s latest win came through stops and turnovers; Brooklyn’s latest loss came one shot away from beating Boston. Those are more useful starting points than the Pistons’ 4-1 record and the Nets’ 0-4 start alone. Detroit is a 7.5-point favorite Friday, with its strong defensive assessment facing a Brooklyn attack that just showed how competitive it can be.

Detroit turned a difficult shooting night into a win

Cade Cunningham scored 30 points in Wednesday’s 97-89 win over Charlotte. Paul Reed added 16, and Ausar Thompson contributed seven points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Neither team shot consistently, but Detroit forced 25 Charlotte turnovers while committing 14.

The Pistons trailed 51-44 at halftime before opening the third quarter with a 16-5 run. Four different players made three-pointers during that burst, and Detroit forced eight turnovers in the quarter. Five more Hornets turnovers in the fourth helped keep Charlotte from mounting a serious late challenge.

That performance fits our A- defensive grade for Detroit. It also supplied a useful response to Tuesday’s 111-97 loss at New York. The Pistons have held their last three opponents to 93, 111 and 89 points, giving their favorite role more substance than the winning record by itself.

Our projections favor Detroit on the boards, about 45 rebounds against Brooklyn’s 39, and in assists, roughly 28 against 25. That gives the Pistons a favorable rebounding and playmaking outlook alongside our B offensive grade. They still need enough scoring to create separation against a Nets team that stayed close throughout its last game.

Brooklyn’s record hides its best recent performance

The Nets lost 125-124 in overtime at Boston on Tuesday, with Jayson Tatum hitting the winner at the buzzer. Michael Porter Jr. had 27 points and 12 rebounds, Julius Randle scored 24 and rookie Mikel Brown Jr. added 17. Neither team led by more than eight points.

Brown forced overtime with a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in regulation. His missed layup late in the extra period then gave Boston the final opportunity. The result was another loss, but the game offered a much stronger showing than Brooklyn’s 27-point defeat against Indiana two days earlier.

Porter and Randle give the Nets a concrete scoring route to test Detroit. Brooklyn also scored 121 in a four-point loss at Cleveland earlier this season. The challenge is repeating those productive nights against a defense we rate much more highly than the Nets’ C offense.

Detroit has covered in four of five games this season. Brooklyn has covered twice in four, including its close losses at Cleveland and Boston. That distinction matters with a sizable spread: the Nets’ search for their first win hasn’t prevented them from making some opponents work.

The 222.5 total brings opposing recent patterns together

Detroit’s last three games have gone Under, while Brooklyn’s last three have gone Over. DraftKings’ total is 222.5, and the latest results show why those patterns differ. Detroit won with only 97 points Wednesday by repeatedly stopping Charlotte’s possessions; Brooklyn’s Boston game featured strong individual scoring and an overtime period.

The Pistons’ defensive grade and Brooklyn’s modest offensive assessment provide a case for more resistance than the Nets encountered Tuesday. Detroit’s own recent scoring—97 points in each of its last two games—also deserves attention when considering what it can contribute to the total.

The counterweight is Brooklyn’s demonstrated scoring from Porter, Randle and Brown, along with our B- defensive grade for the Nets, which leaves Detroit with a workable matchup at the other end. Keeping the Nets from turning this into another close, productive scoring night is a more meaningful test than relying on their winless record.

Detroit has the stronger overall case through its defense, current results and rebounding outlook. Brooklyn’s close road losses provide the main reason to question easy separation. The key is whether the Pistons can disrupt the Nets’ scoring possessions as effectively as they disrupted Charlotte’s, while producing more of their own offense.
