Rockets–Mavericks: Can Dallas Make the Rematch Closer?

Houston has already beaten Dallas once, and its unbeaten start has been just as impressive against the spread. Friday’s rematch brings a different test: the Mavericks are coming off their most productive three-point shooting night of the season, while Alperen Sengun’s back leaves an important question around the Rockets’ lineup. With Houston favored by 6.5 points, the useful comparison is how much of each team’s latest blowout can carry into this meeting.

Houston’s start has substance beyond the record

The Rockets are 5-0 and have covered in all five games this season. That includes their 128-110 home win over Dallas in the season opener, when Houston was a 9.5-point favorite. The rematch is in Dallas, so that earlier margin is useful background rather than a ready-made answer to the new spread.

Houston followed that opening win with four more victories, most recently beating Milwaukee 132-100 on Wednesday. Several players contributed: Fred VanVleet scored 24 points, Amen Thompson had 23 and Kevin Durant added 18. Houston shot 54.8% and made 23 of 26 free throws, while a 34-14 second quarter opened the game up.

That win also showed Houston could produce a big offensive night with Sengun sidelined. It doesn’t make his availability a small detail. The Houston center missed Milwaukee with low back soreness and is questionable for Friday against Dallas. His availability matters before evaluating a player market or making a final decision on the game.

Dallas needs more than another hot shooting night

Wins over Miami and Oklahoma City have lifted the Mavericks to 3-2. Cooper Flagg supplied 26 points and eight assists in Wednesday’s 120-96 win over the Thunder, and Kyrie Irving scored 15. That gives Dallas a concrete starting point: Flagg contributed as both a scorer and a distributor, rather than leaving the offense dependent on one type of production.

The size of that win needs some context, though. Dallas made a season-best 16 threes on 45 attempts, while Oklahoma City went 5 of 32 and was missing several regular contributors. The Mavericks earned the result, but an 11-three advantage is a demanding foundation to repeat against Houston.

Our grades give the Rockets an A- defensively compared with Dallas’ C-, while both offenses receive a C+. That makes Houston’s resistance the more convincing distinction in our assessment. Dallas’ path to staying close runs through sustaining its offensive execution against a stronger defensive evaluation, rather than assuming Wednesday’s shooting gap will follow it into Friday. Naji Marshall, part of Dallas’ bench picture, is also questionable with an illness.

The total asks which recent pattern travels

The posted total is 225.5. Houston’s games have gone over in four of five this season; Dallas’ games have gone under in four of five. Those opposing patterns make the matchup more interesting than either streak alone, especially after Houston scored 132 and Dallas scored 120 in their latest wins.

The Rockets’ defensive assessment is a meaningful restraint on Dallas’ scoring outlook. The counterweight is Houston’s ability to generate offense against Milwaukee without Sengun, alongside Dallas’ weaker defensive grade. Sengun’s availability adds another variable. Our projections put rebounds at roughly 47 for Houston and 45 for Dallas, a modest difference that doesn’t suggest the Mavericks can rely on a large rebounding cushion to offset a less favorable shooting night.

Houston brings the stronger body of early results and the clearer defensive advantage. Dallas brings an encouraging Flagg performance, but its last winning margin benefited from an unusually wide three-point gap. The central test is whether the Mavericks can keep producing if that gap narrows; Sengun’s status is the personnel update most likely to change the reading of the rematch.
