Celtics vs. Rockets: Tatum’s trips to the line meet Houston’s hot shooting

Boston and Houston arrive with one loss apiece, but their latest wins offered very different scoring stories. Jayson Tatum kept the Celtics moving at the free-throw line Sunday, while the Rockets rode a big perimeter shooting night Saturday. Monday’s meeting tests those sources of offense against two defenses we rate highly—and gives Boston a quick turnaround after its fifth straight victory.

Houston has been winning the margin battle

The Rockets are 4.5-point favorites in the DraftKings lines after opening 6–1 both outright and against the spread. Their latest win, 119–98 over Oklahoma City, followed their first defeat of the season at Dallas. They’ve already shown an ability to bounce back and win comfortably.

Boston is 5–1 outright but 3–3 against the spread. Its five-game winning streak includes a one-point victory over Brooklyn and a 14-point win over Chicago that fell just short of the spread. The Celtics have found ways to win without consistently creating the margins expected of them.

That makes this a useful test of the Rockets’ early success. Houston has been clearing expectations, but Boston brings a winning streak built from several different kinds of games. The Celtics play on consecutive nights, moving from Orlando to Houston, while the Rockets last played Saturday.

Two different ways to get points

Tatum scored 32 in Boston’s 108–97 win at Orlando, making 15 of 17 free throws. Paul George added 17 points, and the Celtics recovered after Orlando erased a double-digit deficit. Boston’s scoring held up late even after its earlier cushion disappeared.

Getting that much from the line gave Tatum another way to sustain the offense. Whether Boston can keep earning those trips matters against a Houston defense we grade A. Those trips were especially valuable as Orlando fought back, giving Boston a way to keep scoring while its lead was under pressure.

Houston’s latest scoring surge came from outside in its win over Oklahoma City. Jabari Smith Jr. scored 30 points and Marcus Smart added 24 against Oklahoma City. Smith made six of 12 three-point attempts, Smart hit seven of 10, and the Rockets finished 18 of 41 from deep. Alperen Sengun also contributed 16 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists.

That performance gave Houston scoring beyond Kevin Durant, who had 14 points. It also sets a demanding shooting benchmark for Monday. Boston’s defense carries an A– grade in our analysis, so the Rockets’ ability to find production beyond another hot night from Smith and Smart is a central matchup question.

Different scoring histories meet at 219.5

The total is 219.5. Five of Houston’s seven games have gone Over this season, compared with two of Boston’s six. Still, the Rockets’ latest win stayed Under its game total even with all those made threes, as Oklahoma City finished with 98 points.

That’s why Houston’s shooting and the combined scoring deserve separate attention. Another productive perimeter night could put pressure on this total, while the strong defensive evaluations on both sides offer resistance. Boston’s ability to generate free throws is another factor: it provided a substantial part of Tatum’s Sunday scoring and could help the Celtics sustain their attack if baskets are harder to come by.

Houston’s injury reports leave two availability questions. Clint Capela is questionable with an ankle injury, and Reed Sheppard is questionable with a back issue, according to Sunday’s reports for Monday’s game.

Houston’s steady run of covers and extra day between games strengthen its case as the home favorite. Boston brings a highly rated defense and a recent example of free throws helping it withstand a comeback. The Rockets’ scoring beyond Durant makes them a demanding opponent, but matching Saturday’s shooting is a tall order. Boston’s route to the line is a meaningful counterweight to Houston’s margin record. For the total, the defensive grades and Oklahoma City’s low output Saturday are reasons to look beyond Houston’s made threes.
