Buffalo’s trip to Houston comes with a narrow spread and one matchup at the center of it: can the Bills turn their projected advantage on the ground into the kind of steady offense that travels?
Buffalo is a 1.5-point favorite in the latest DraftKings market, with the total set at 44.5. That’s close to a toss-up, which fits a Week 1 game between two 0-0 teams with meaningful changes and little current-season evidence.
Game details and latest odds
- Matchup: Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans
- Date and time: Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. EDT
- Venue: Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas
- Spread: Bills -1.5 (-108); Texans +1.5 (-112)
- Total: 44.5, with the over and under both priced at -110
The small spread puts extra weight on field position, turnovers and whether either offense can avoid obvious passing situations. Buffalo begins the Joe Brady era, while Houston enters with a revamped offensive line and a defense led by Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, according to CBS Sports’ matchup report. Buffalo also has a new defensive coordinator in Jim Leonhard.
Buffalo’s clearest path runs through balance
Our projections put Buffalo at roughly 148 rushing yards on 31 attempts, compared with about 101 yards on 27 attempts for Houston. The Bills also carry the higher total-yardage projection, about 354 to 318.
That doesn’t require taking the ball out of Josh Allen’s hands. His individual markets show how many ways he can influence the game: DraftKings lists his passing-yard line at 223.5 and his rushing-yard line at 33.5. James Cook III has a rushing line of 76.5. If Buffalo can stay balanced and prevent Houston’s pass rush from dictating the game, its offense has a more comfortable route through such a short spread.
Houston’s answer starts with forcing Buffalo away from that script. The Texans’ defense is the clearest counterweight to the Bills’ statistical edge, and Houston has already shown it can make this matchup uncomfortable. The Texans beat Buffalo 23-19 at home in November 2025.
Houston has a path through the passing game
Our projections call for C.J. Stroud to lead the higher-volume passing attack, with Houston around 36 attempts and 217 passing yards. Buffalo projects for about 30 attempts and 206 passing yards. Stroud’s passing-yard prop is 219.5, while Nico Collins has the game’s highest listed receiving-yard line at 69.5.
Across their previous 10 games, Houston went 9-1 straight up and 6-4 against the spread. Buffalo finished 7-3 overall and 5-5 against the spread. Those samples cross the end of the 2025 regular season and playoffs, so they’re useful background rather than a direct forecast for a new season.
There’s also some Houston-specific history for Allen: CBS Sports reports that he is 0-4 in games played in Houston. It’s notable alongside last season’s result, although the personnel and coaching changes limit how much weight it deserves on its own.

How the spread and total stack up
Our two-star side strength and one-star total strength point to modest conviction in both markets. The spread is the more interesting lens because Buffalo’s projected rushing and total-yardage advantages have to be weighed against Houston’s defense, home setting and recent success in this matchup.
The 44.5 total sits in a reasonable middle range relative to the available offensive evidence. With only a one-star total rating, there isn’t much reason to force an over-or-under argument before seeing how the new coaching and offensive-line pieces settle in.
Buffalo’s best route is a balanced day that keeps Allen out of long-yardage situations. Houston needs to disrupt that balance, create passing downs and give Stroud enough possessions to challenge the Buffalo defense. With the spread sitting at only 1.5 points, one short field or late turnover could decide both the game and the cover.
