Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford give Bills–Rams plenty of scoring appeal, but their latest games also showed how quickly turnovers can change the picture. Buffalo suffered its first loss of the season, while Los Angeles needed a late comeback to survive two Stafford interceptions. The useful question for Monday night is whether these talented offenses can put together cleaner, more consistent drives—and how much their recent mistakes should influence the betting outlook.
Both quarterbacks have something to clean up
Buffalo fell 29-26 to New England on Sunday despite Allen throwing for 253 yards and contributing a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown. Khalil Shakir lost a fumble, and Allen’s late interception ended the Bills’ final possession. That followed a five-giveaway game against the Chargers, which Buffalo still won. Seven turnovers across two outings give its otherwise productive offense a clear problem to address.
The Rams beat Philadelphia 24-20 after trailing by 10 entering the fourth quarter. Stafford threw for 317 yards, but his two first-half interceptions led to 10 Eagles points. Puka Nacua caught nine passes for 125 yards, and Kyren Williams scored twice in the final four minutes. Los Angeles showed it could build long touchdown drives when it needed them; relying on another late rescue is a tougher proposition against Buffalo.
Why the three-point spread deserves a closer look
Our grades put both teams at A overall, with Buffalo holding the stronger offensive grade, A+ to A, and Los Angeles holding the defensive advantage, A to A-. With Allen and Stafford leading these attacks, that points to a competitive matchup rather than a broad talent mismatch. DraftKings’ three-point spread asks the Rams to do more than simply win a close game.
Los Angeles also gave its offense room to recover last week by holding Philadelphia to 172 total yards and no third-down conversions in 12 attempts. That’s useful support for the defensive side of the matchup, although the Eagles entered that game missing six starters and lost more players during it. Buffalo’s highly rated offense presents a different test.
Personnel adds an important wrinkle. Buffalo receiver DJ Moore is questionable with a shoulder injury after missing Friday’s practice, leaving an important receiving option uncertain. On the other side, ESPN reports that Aaron Donald practiced fully Friday and said he plans to play after missing Week 4 with back soreness. That’s encouraging for Los Angeles, though his stated intention isn’t a guarantee that he’ll play Monday.

A 54.5-point total puts drive reliability in focus
Across four recent regular-season games this year, Buffalo has had three overs, while the Rams have split evenly between overs and unders. The Rams’ last two totals were 42.5 and 44.5—well below this matchup’s 54.5—so those overs came against a different scoring bar. Buffalo offers a more direct counterweight: its 41-31 win over Detroit came with the same 54.5 total.
Our passing and rushing projections suggest productive but contrasting attacks: about 257 passing yards for Los Angeles against 213 for Buffalo, with the Bills ahead in rushing yards, roughly 146 to 122. Both teams have credible ways to move the ball. Still, the strong defensive grades and uncertainty around Moore matter at this total.
Turnovers complicate that balance rather than pointing neatly toward lower scoring. Stafford’s mistakes handed Philadelphia points last week, while Allen’s final interception erased Buffalo’s chance to answer. The scoring effect depends on whether a giveaway creates an easy opportunity for the opponent or simply cuts short a promising drive.
The takeaway
The Rams’ projected passing advantage and stronger defensive grade give their favorite status a credible foundation. Buffalo’s stronger offensive grade and projected rushing advantage provide a meaningful response, making consistent execution more important than a broad talent gap. At 54.5, Buffalo’s Detroit game shows the scoring potential, while the Rams’ lower recent totals caution against treating every over as equally relevant. The practical focus is on sustained drives and the opportunities turnovers create—not an assumption that recent mistakes must suppress scoring.
