Boise State and Fresno State arrive at Saturday’s matchup with identical 4-1 records and four straight wins, but the most interesting test is how the Broncos’ passing game handles a Bulldogs defense coming off a strong performance. Maddux Madsen completed all but four of his passes last weekend; Fresno State held Washington State to 182 total yards. Those performances make the degree of separation between these teams more interesting than their rankings alone.
An efficient quarterback meets a tougher test
Madsen completed 17 of 21 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns as Boise State beat Utah State 37-18 on Saturday. Dylan Riley added two rushing touchdowns, giving the Broncos production through both the air and the ground.
There was another important contribution: Jake Ripp returned an interception for a touchdown. Boise State’s comfortable final score included points from its defense, not just sustained scoring drives. Madsen’s accuracy is the more useful offensive takeaway heading into Fresno.
The Bulldogs held Washington State to six points, 182 total yards and just 30 rushing yards last Saturday. The Cougars converted only three of 14 third downs. That’s a strong recent result, although Washington State entered that game converting only 28.9% of its third-down attempts this season. Fresno State now faces a quarterback coming off a much cleaner performance.
What the spread asks of Boise State
DraftKings has Boise State favored by 6.5 points. The Broncos need more than an outright win to cover that number, and Fresno State’s recent results give bettors a reason to examine the price closely. Across their last 10 games, spanning the 2025 and 2026 seasons, the Bulldogs are 8-2 against the spread; Boise State is 5-5. Both teams have won four straight this season, but Fresno State has also covered in each of those four wins.

Our yardage projections offer a useful counterweight to Boise State’s latest scoring result: we project roughly 375 total yards for the Broncos and 350 for the Bulldogs. The rushing estimates are especially close, at about 168 yards for Boise State and 162 for Fresno State. There’s relatively modest separation in expected yardage rather than a huge production gap.
Fresno State also has an encouraging recent quarterback performance of its own. Jayden Mandal completed 24 of 33 passes for 245 yards against Washington State. The Bulldogs’ path to staying competitive includes carrying that production forward, rather than asking their defense to do everything.
The key to this matchup
Boise State’s strongest case is Madsen’s efficiency paired with a running game that supplied two touchdowns last week. Fresno State’s counterweight is its recent defensive performance and a sustained run of beating the spread, though Washington State’s existing third-down struggles temper how much we can take from that defensive showing. With relatively close yardage projections, the most important test is whether the Bulldogs can make Boise State work harder for its scoring opportunities while keeping their own passing game productive.
