Red Sox vs. Rays Preview: Can Boston Keep It Close?

Tampa Bay has the better record, stronger recent form and home field for Sunday’s series finale. That explains why the Rays are favored, but Boston’s defense and two competitive games this weekend make the gap less comfortable than it first appears.

The Red Sox and Rays meet at 1:40 p.m. EDT on Sunday, September 20, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Tampa Bay is a -155 favorite on the latest DraftKings moneyline, with Boston at +128. The total is 7.5 runs, priced at -117 to the under and -103 to the over.

Why the Rays are favored

Tampa Bay is 94-60 and has gone 8-2 over its last 10 games. Boston is 84-71 and 4-6 over the same span, giving the Rays a clear edge in both overall record and recent results.

This series hasn’t been one-sided, though. Boston won the opener 4-2 before Tampa Bay answered with a 2-1 victory Saturday. The Rays needed Richie Palacios’ ninth-inning RBI single to finish that comeback, according to the AP.

Our grades also point to a more balanced matchup than the records alone suggest. Both clubs carry a B overall grade. Tampa Bay pairs a B offense with B+ defense, while Boston has a B- offense and an A- defense. The Rays have the better recent results and a slightly stronger lineup outlook, but the Red Sox own the best unit grade in the matchup.

Why Boston can keep the gap small

Our projections don’t show much distance between the two lineups. Both clubs land around eight hits, 12 total bases and three walks, with Tampa Bay holding only a small edge in hits and Boston projected for a few more doubles.

That narrow gap puts extra weight on converting limited scoring chances. Saturday was a good example: Tampa Bay went without a hit with runners in scoring position until the ninth inning and still found a way to win.

The confirmed starting pitchers are Griffin Jax for Tampa Bay and Patrick Sandoval for Boston. A fresh lineup update also has Willson Contreras out for Boston with a hand issue, with Nick Sogard starting at first base.

How the market fits the matchup

Tampa Bay’s moneyline price reflects its 94 wins, 8-2 recent stretch and home setting. At the same time, our two-star side rating fits a matchup in which the favorite has the stronger results profile but the hitting projections leave little room between the clubs.

The total offers a useful secondary clue rather than the main story. Eight of Boston’s last 10 games and seven of Tampa Bay’s last 10 finished under their listed totals. That history doesn’t settle Sunday’s scoring outlook, but it helps explain why the under is carrying the slightly higher price at 7.5.

What matters most

Tampa Bay has built the stronger case through its record, recent run and ability to win close games. Boston’s counterweight is meaningful: its A- defensive grade leads the matchup, and the projected hitting output is close enough that another tight finish wouldn’t be surprising.

The deciding factor could be which club turns similar baserunner volume into runs. Tampa Bay has done that more consistently lately, while Boston has already shown twice this weekend that it can keep the Rays within one late swing.
