Capitals–Predators: Nashville’s Comebacks Need a Better Start

Nashville has only four wins, but five of its defeats have come after regulation. Tuesday’s comeback against the Islanders captured the frustration: the Predators erased a 3-0 deficit, then lost in a shootout. Washington arrives Thursday with a stronger record and fresh scoring contributions from several forwards, yet the moneyline is almost even. The matchup asks whether Nashville can turn another competitive performance into a complete result against an attack that just scored five.

A comeback worth separating from the final result

Filip Forsberg began Nashville’s rally with a power-play goal, Alexander Kerfoot followed, and Ryan O’Reilly tied the game in the third period. Through Tuesday, Forsberg had scored in two straight games after managing one goal in his first 10. O’Reilly had three goals across his last two through Tuesday.

Those are useful signs for a team that has won only three of its last 10 games this season. Nashville also beat Colorado 6-2 in the game before the Islanders loss, so the recent attack has offered more than its win count alone suggests.

The other side of Tuesday’s comeback is the early deficit that made it necessary. Nashville’s 0-5 record in games extending beyond regulation explains part of its 4-3-5 overall record, but it doesn’t erase the work needed before overtime. For an outright bet, the competitive stretches and the final outcome both matter.

Washington brings more than one scoring option

Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou each scored twice in Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Philadelphia, with Tuch’s second going into an empty net. Dylan Strome supplied three assists. Tuch reached nine goals in his first 11 games for Washington, and the Capitals finished their five-game homestand with four wins.

The trip to Nashville comes on the second night of consecutive games after that homestand. That is a different setting from Wednesday, though the schedule alone cannot tell us how Washington will perform. The Capitals have won six of their last 10 games, all this season, and have scored at least four in each of their latest two wins.

DraftKings has Washington at -112 and Nashville at -108. That leaves little separation despite their different records. Our shot projections are similarly close, at roughly 28 for each team. The useful comparison is therefore the scoring contributions and defensive execution behind those records, rather than expecting one side to overwhelm the other through shot volume.

Scoring signs meet a 6.5 total

Seven of Washington’s 11 games this season went Over their respective totals, returning a historical profit of 2.19 units from flat one-unit Over bets at those historical totals. The Capitals’ last three games each produced seven combined goals, although those results came against differing posted lines. Nashville’s improving contributions from Forsberg and O’Reilly add another reason to examine the scoring environment closely.

The restraint is that sustained scoring from both teams remains a demand at 6.5. Juuse Saros, Nashville’s expected goalie, allowed no more than three goals in each of his latest four appearances this season. Charlie Lindgren is expected for Washington after Logan Thompson played Wednesday; Lindgren allowed nine goals across his three appearances this season. Both starters remain unconfirmed, and the different sample sizes deserve care.

Nashville’s rally makes its recent offense worth respecting, while Washington’s multiple contributors make another slow start costly. The clearest test is whether the Predators can stay competitive from the opening period instead of spending another game recovering. That gives readers a more useful way to assess the close moneyline and the scoring threshold than assuming Nashville is due for an overtime reversal.
