Miami hasn’t won yet, but the Heat are still 8.5-point favorites against Dallas. That’s the interesting tension in Monday’s matchup: Miami has the stronger offensive outlook in our analysis, while its first three games have shown how difficult it can be to turn that potential into control. With Cooper Flagg’s availability a significant question for the Mavericks, the test is whether the Heat can build separation—and defend well enough to keep it.
Miami’s attack offers promise; its results demand caution
Our grades favor Miami’s offense, with a B+ compared with Dallas’ C-. The defensive gap is smaller: we give the Heat a C and the Mavericks a D+. That makes Miami’s scoring potential the clearest strength in this matchup, rather than an expectation that it will shut Dallas down.
The Heat have allowed 131, 128 and 115 points in their first three games, losing all three and failing to cover the spread each time. Saturday’s 115-110 loss at Charlotte showed both sides of their start. Miami rallied from a 22-point third-quarter deficit to tie the game late, but couldn’t finish the comeback. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 14 points and fouled out, while Davion Mitchell scored 22 and Bam Adebayo added 20.
There’s more offensive upside here than that one Giannis performance suggests. Our projections put Miami at about 31 assists and 47 rebounds, compared with roughly 25 assists and 43 rebounds for Dallas. That outlook points toward a more connected attack and an advantage on the boards. The Heat’s early defensive results remain the counterweight to laying a substantial spread.
Dallas’ latest loss needs some personnel context
Dallas fell 122-106 to San Antonio on Saturday without Kyrie Irving or Flagg. The Mavericks’ starters combined for just 50 points, and San Antonio won the second-chance scoring battle 25-10. That rebounding shortfall matters against a Miami team we expect to have the edge on the glass.
Irving is part of Dallas’ backcourt for this matchup, so Saturday’s scoring struggles aren’t a clean template for Monday. The Mavericks also beat Indiana 121-105 on Friday, a reminder that their attack hasn’t been uniformly sluggish.
Flagg’s situation is more consequential: the latest game-specific report calls him questionable with a shoulder injury, as does the Mavericks’ official preview. His availability is the key personnel update to watch when assessing Dallas’ scoring options.

What the 238.5 total asks of these teams
DraftKings’ total of 238.5 puts the focus on offensive improvement as well as defensive vulnerability. Miami has scored only 106, 111 and 110 points so far, but our projections anticipate about 15 made threes against Dallas, compared with about 11 for the Mavericks. That gives the Heat a plausible source of additional scoring against a team we rate poorly on defense.
The restraint comes from Dallas’ uncertain personnel and Miami’s uneven production. Both teams have gone under in two of their three games this season. It’s a small sample, but it captures the tension at this total: the defenses offer room for scoring, while the attacks haven’t consistently delivered it. Irving’s presence and Flagg’s availability matter more to that assessment than simply carrying Saturday’s scores forward.
The matchup’s practical takeaway
Miami’s offensive advantage gives us the strongest reason to understand its favorite status, but covering this spread asks for more than a better attack. The Heat need to turn their passing and rebounding advantages into sustained separation while limiting the defensive lapses that have marked their start. Dallas’ win at Indiana shows the scoring upside that Saturday’s short-handed loss obscures, making Flagg’s availability and the Mavericks’ response on the boards especially important. Miami’s offensive ceiling is easier to see than its ability to control an entire game.
