Florida State’s defense delivered a statement last Saturday, but Louisville presents a different test: stopping an attack that can do plenty of damage on the ground. The Seminoles have won two straight, while the Cardinals have lost two straight without losing their ability to move the ball. The interesting question is whether FSU can carry its defensive breakthrough onto the road against Louisville’s productive running backs.
Louisville can run beyond the pressure
Florida State beat Virginia 38-7 behind a remarkable 10 sacks, after recording seven across its first four games. The Seminoles also held Virginia to 37 rushing yards on 40 carries. That was a major improvement, though one dominant afternoon leaves a tougher question for this matchup: can FSU disrupt Louisville without relying on another extraordinary sack count?
The Cardinals’ running backs offer the clearest challenge. In Louisville’s 31-28 loss at NC State, Isaac Brown rushed for 125 yards on nine carries, including a 70-yard touchdown. Keyjuan Brown added 88 yards on eight carries. Louisville finished with 485 total yards, but a costly first-quarter fumble helped put it behind. The production was there; turning it into a cleaner performance is the next step.
Our rushing projections give Louisville roughly 190 yards compared with 170 for Florida State. Overall yardage is much closer—about 410 yards apiece. That makes the ground game a useful distinction rather than evidence of a broad mismatch. We also give Louisville’s offense an A- grade against Florida State’s B+, while rating both defenses B+.
Florida State has its own rushing answer
Ashton Daniels ran for 136 yards and five touchdowns against Virginia, setting a Florida State quarterback record for rushing scores. Ousmane Kromah contributed another 80 yards and has reached at least that mark in each of FSU’s five games this season. The Seminoles have a way to keep this competitive through their own rushing production, not just their defense.
That matters with Louisville favored by 3.5 points at DraftKings. Our nearly even yardage projections put the focus on how each team finishes possessions and protects the ball, rather than an assumption that the Cardinals will consistently move it farther. Louisville’s latest game showed how substantial production can still end in a narrow loss.

Two different routes to the 59.5-point total
The scoring evidence pulls in different directions. Across the five recent games from this season available for each team, four of Florida State’s finished below their respective totals; four of Louisville’s finished above. Those are small samples against different opponents and thresholds, but they capture a real contrast in how these teams’ games have unfolded.
At 59.5, the current total asks for at least 60 combined points to clear it. Louisville’s rushing production and FSU’s Daniels-Kromah combination give both teams ways to sustain scoring. Louisville also allowed NC State 493 total yards, including 373 passing yards, last Saturday—a reminder that the Cardinals’ own defense has something to prove.
The counterweight is Florida State’s defensive showing against Virginia: if the Seminoles can limit Louisville’s explosive runs as well as disrupt its passing game, reaching that threshold becomes a tougher task. Similar yardage projections alone don’t settle how many possessions will become touchdowns, and those contrasting over-under records came against different scoring thresholds.
The matchup’s biggest test
Louisville’s strongest case is its productive rushing attack and our higher offensive grade. Florida State’s answer is a defense coming off a 10-sack performance, backed by a rushing game with multiple contributors. The key is whether FSU can contain the Cardinals’ backs without needing another sack-heavy afternoon. If it can, Louisville will have less room to absorb the mistakes that hurt it at NC State. If those explosive runs return, the Cardinals have a clearer route to scoring—and FSU’s own ground game becomes more important to keeping pace.
