Guardians vs. Rays preview: Can Cleveland carry its comeback into the ALCS?

Cleveland just showed how dangerous it can be with its season on the line. Now comes a different test: opening the AL Championship Series against a Tampa Bay team that swept its previous round and has had a longer break. For Monday’s opener, the useful question is whether the Guardians can carry that comeback forward against Drew Rasmussen—or whether the pitching matchup and their bullpen workload make this a tougher assignment than their momentum suggests.

Two winning teams, different routes here

The Guardians beat the White Sox 2-0 on Saturday to finish a comeback from an 0-2 Division Series deficit. José Ramírez supplied the two-run homer, and Cleveland’s pitchers struck out 21. That was a spectacular finish, but it also took substantial work from the relief corps: Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith appeared in all five games, with Smith recording a five-out save in the clincher.

Tampa Bay finished its series Wednesday, beating the Yankees 4-3 behind a tiebreaking two-run homer from Victor Mesa Jr. Both clubs are 6-4 across their last 10 games, spanning the end of the regular season and the playoffs. The difference is the route: the Rays swept three games, while Cleveland needed all five. That gives Tampa Bay more time between rounds, though it doesn’t tell us exactly how either bullpen will be used Monday.

Rasmussen presents the next challenge

DraftKings’ moneyline odds make Tampa Bay a -172 favorite, with Cleveland at +142. Our analysis also rates the Rays more highly in both key units: an A- for pitching and a B for the lineup, compared with Cleveland’s C+ pitching and C- lineup grades.

Rasmussen faces Foster Griffin, and their outs markets offer a useful workload comparison. Rasmussen’s threshold is 17.5 outs; Griffin’s is 13.5. Those numbers point toward a longer outing from Rasmussen, making Cleveland’s transition to its bullpen worth watching after that demanding previous round.

There’s also a matchup-specific check on Cleveland’s momentum: Tampa Bay went 5-1 against the Guardians during the regular season, including three shutouts. That history adds weight to the pitching challenge, even though this opener brings its own starter matchup and postseason workload.

The Rays’ success has translated into historical betting returns, too. Our data shows 101 outright wins in 165 games this season, including the playoffs, and a profit of 19.65 units from flat one-unit moneyline bets. That’s a strong season for Rays backers, but Monday’s -172 price still needs its own assessment.

Why the 6.5-run total isn’t a simple shutout story

Saturday’s pitching performance is only part of Cleveland’s recent scoring picture. The Guardians scored nine runs in each of the two wins before their clincher, and three of their five Division Series games went over their respective totals. Tampa Bay’s three-game series produced one over, one under and one push.

Our hit and walk projections call for roughly eight Tampa Bay hits and seven Cleveland hits, with about three walks apiece. We project fewer than one home run for each club. At a posted total of 6.5, that puts the focus on whether hits and walks bunch together into rallies. Tampa Bay’s stronger pitching assessment and its three regular-season shutouts of Cleveland pull the other way; the Guardians’ recent nine-run games show why a low-scoring repeat isn’t automatic.

Tampa Bay has the stronger matchup case in our grades, with a longer break between rounds and a higher outs threshold for Rasmussen adding useful context. Cleveland’s answer is a lineup that has just won with both big scoring nights and one decisive swing. The key is how much work Griffin leaves for the Guardians’ bullpen: an early handoff would put more of this opener on relievers who worked throughout the previous series. That’s a more useful lens for assessing the favorite’s price and the 6.5-run total than assuming either Cleveland’s shutout or its comeback will carry straight into Monday.
