The White Sox are one win from the ALCS, and Cleveland’s most pressing problem is at the plate. Chicago took the first two games of this Division Series while holding the Guardians to three runs combined. Now, with Daniel Espino facing Sean Newcomb in Game 3, the question is whether Cleveland can turn enough good at-bats into sustained scoring to keep its season alive.
Chicago has earned its momentum
The White Sox return home after a 4-3 win Monday that showed how quickly they can change a game. Braden Montgomery’s two-run double supplied the go-ahead runs, while Sean Burke allowed just one hit over 5⅓ innings of relief. Chicago is 4-0 this postseason, with all four wins coming on the road.
That success fits a broader stretch of good results: the White Sox have won eight of their last 10 games, compared with six of 10 for Cleveland. The Guardians’ scoring has been especially uneven. They’ve scored three runs or fewer in seven of those games, but reached double digits in the other three. There’s been real upside in the bats, just not much consistency—and none of those big performances has come in this series.
Cleveland’s pitching is the counterweight
Our grades give Cleveland an A for pitching against Chicago’s C+, while the lineup comparison favors the White Sox, C to D+. That split captures the challenge for the Guardians: their strongest unit can keep a game manageable, but their lineup still has to give it enough support.
Game 2 was a useful example. Gavin Williams struck out 11, yet Cleveland couldn’t hold an early two-run lead. Chase DeLauter had two hits and Jo Adell delivered an RBI triple in the eighth, but those contributions weren’t enough. The Guardians need productive innings to last longer than a promising start or a late rally.
Our hit projections offer a modest counterpoint to Cleveland’s recent struggles, with about eight hits for the Guardians and seven for Chicago. That’s a narrow difference, but it leaves room for a more competitive day at the plate. The important part is what Cleveland does with those opportunities: scattered hits won’t solve the problem if too many runners are left waiting for the next one.

A modest favorite, not a runaway matchup
DraftKings’ moneyline odds put Chicago at -123 and Cleveland at +102. The White Sox are favored, but only modestly—a useful distinction when their 2-0 series lead makes the matchup feel more one-sided. Chicago’s recent results and stronger lineup grade support its case; Cleveland’s pitching grade supplies the clearest counterweight.
Chicago has the stronger recent results and has already won both a shutout and a close comeback in this series. Cleveland’s pitching grade and competitive hit projection keep this from looking like a runaway matchup, but the Guardians still have to turn opportunities into sustained production. They don’t need to recreate one of their double-digit scoring days. Pairing their pitching strength with more than isolated bursts at the plate is what matters most to their chances of extending the series.
