Atlanta doesn’t have to look far for what needs to change against Houston: finish defensive possessions and make more of its own shots. The Rockets beat the Hawks 121-114 on Saturday behind 22 second-chance points, while Atlanta went 12-for-45 from three-point range. With Houston now a 5.5-point favorite in the rematch, the interesting question is whether the Hawks can close that rebounding gap—or shoot well enough to overcome it.
Houston’s extra chances are the clearest starting point
The Rockets collected 13 offensive rebounds in the first meeting. Their scoring came from across the rotation: seven players reached double figures, Kevin Durant scored 22, and Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason added 19 apiece. Atlanta cut a 20-point deficit to five late, but Houston had built enough cushion to withstand the rally.
Our rebound projections put Houston at about 48 and Atlanta at 43. That points to a broader advantage on the glass, though it doesn’t tell us how many offensive rebounds Houston will collect. The Rockets will also be without center Steven Adams, who has been ruled out against Atlanta with a right soleus strain.
At the other end, our grades favor Houston’s ability to get stops: we give the Rockets an A on defense, compared with a C for Atlanta’s offense. That makes cutting out Houston’s extra chances especially valuable for the Hawks—they’d have less ground to make up against a defense we rate highly.
Atlanta has a shooting response—and Johnson
Jalen Johnson gave Atlanta plenty to build on Saturday, scoring 26 points and matching his career high with 16 assists. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 18 points, and Aaron Wiggins scored 16 off the bench. The Hawks generated production beyond one scorer even on a rough shooting night.
That three-point performance leaves room for improvement, though a rebound isn’t automatic against Houston’s defense. Nor should the Rockets assume they’ll get the same shooting contribution from Sheppard, who made five of his 11 threes in the first meeting. Atlanta’s case is stronger if it improves its own shooting while making Houston find a different source of offense.
The betting history adds a useful distinction between winning and covering. Houston has covered all three games this season, returning 2.78 units on flat one-unit spread bets. Across the past year, however, betting against the Rockets went 49-40 and returned 4.54 units on the same basis. Those different windows don’t settle today’s price, but they put the unbeaten start in perspective.

What matters at a total of 229.5
Saturday’s 235 points came despite Atlanta’s missed threes, which gives the current 229.5 total an interesting tension. Better Hawks shooting could sustain scoring, while another productive night on the offensive glass would give Houston additional opportunities. But fewer second chances and a quieter three-point night from Sheppard could take away two important sources of Saturday’s production. Our strong assessment of Houston’s defense is another reason not to assume the rematch follows the same scoring script.
Houston has the stronger supported case on the glass and in our defensive assessment. Atlanta’s counter is Johnson’s creation and the possibility of better perimeter shooting. Ending possessions cleanly is the Hawks’ most important lever: it would reduce the burden on their shooters rather than leave them trying to offset another night of Houston second-chance points. For both the spread and the total, that makes the rebounding battle more useful than simply expecting Saturday’s score to repeat.
