Heat vs. Warriors preview: Can Golden State make its lead last?

Klay Thompson’s last-second three rescued Miami on Wednesday. Now the Heat follow that overtime comeback with a visit to a Golden State team that has won five straight and hasn’t played since Monday. The schedule favors the Warriors, but Miami’s stars just showed how quickly they can erase a deficit. Creating a lead and keeping it could be two different challenges for the favorite.

The streak is real, and the price asks for more

Golden State has covered six consecutive spreads, including a loss at Phoenix before its current winning streak began. Miami has covered just twice in eight games this season. The saved DraftKings spread has Golden State favored by 7.5, a larger assignment than the Warriors faced in either of their last two wins. The streak is useful context, but those earlier covers came against different prices.

Monday’s 116–113 win over Phoenix illustrates the distinction. Stephen Curry supplied 34 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Brandin Podziemski added 20. Golden State recovered from a 16-point second-quarter deficit, lost Draymond Green to a third-quarter ejection and still held off the Suns, the AP reported. That was a resilient win, though the three-point finish left little separation.

Golden State has had two days without a game, while Miami arrives for the second night of a back-to-back after overtime in Los Angeles. That gives the Warriors a reason to test whether Miami can keep answering through four quarters. The schedule difference is clear; how much it affects the Heat’s play remains to be seen.

Miami’s stars offer a counterweight

The Heat’s 117–116 win over the Clippers was more than Thompson’s final shot. Bam Adebayo scored 35 points with 10 rebounds, Thompson scored 30 while making eight threes, and Giannis Antetokounmpo contributed 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Miami trailed by 20 late in the second quarter and by 10 with four and a half minutes left in regulation, according to the AP. That group gave Miami several ways back into the game.

The warning is how much rescuing was required. Miami allowed 43 points in the second quarter against a Clippers team that has now lost seven straight. Winning three of its last four is progress, but the Heat’s latest win also exposed the defensive lapses Golden State will want to exploit. Another comeback would be a demanding way to finish consecutive nights.

Our rebounding and turnover projections give Miami about 46 rebounds to Golden State’s 41, with roughly 13 Heat turnovers against 15 for the Warriors. Those expectations offer Miami a counterpoint to the schedule. Competing on the glass and protecting the ball would help it stay involved without relying only on another burst of difficult scoring. Total rebounds alone don’t tell us how many second chances either team will get.

Golden State lists Gui Santos and Kristaps Porzingis out. Its starting group remains unconfirmed, so there is no settled replacement matchup to build the rebounding argument around.

The total depends on more than star power

The listed total is 235.5. Golden State’s games have gone over five times in eight this season, while Miami’s have split evenly between over and under. The Heat’s latest game finished with 233 points, below its 233.5 total even with overtime. Big individual nights and a dramatic finish can still fall short of the price.

Our projections put Golden State near 17 made threes and Miami near 14. Sustained outside shooting offers one route to a scoring exchange, and Miami’s second-quarter breakdown shows how quickly points can pile up. The other side of the total is whether the Heat can keep producing after their overtime effort. Their scorers make that possible, but the schedule adds a reason to watch the quality of their late possessions.

For the spread, Golden State needs its opportunities to become lasting separation. For the total, Miami’s ability to keep answering matters just as much as the Warriors’ shooting. Watch whether the Heat can finish defensive possessions with rebounds and move into organized offense, or whether another stretch of breakdowns forces their stars to chase the game again.
