Carolina brings six straight wins to Winnipeg, and its recent scoring makes the Hurricanes an understandable road favorite. The more interesting question is how much that momentum is worth at -180. The Jets have earned points in six of seven games, and their early betting returns offer a useful reminder: the team winning more often isn’t always the one rewarding bettors more.
A hot streak with a price attached
The Hurricanes beat Washington 4-2 on Tuesday behind two Andrei Svechnikov goals, including the winner with just over six minutes left. Carolina has scored at least four goals in five of its six consecutive wins. This hasn’t been a streak built entirely on scraping through tight games.
Our shot projections give Carolina another useful advantage here: roughly 32 shots to Winnipeg’s 26. That points toward more shooting volume for the Hurricanes, though it doesn’t tell us how dangerous those shots will be. It’s a concrete reason to take Carolina’s attack seriously beyond the winning streak alone.
Still, the DraftKings moneyline puts a meaningful price on that stronger recent run: Carolina is -180, while Winnipeg is +150. Flat one-unit moneyline bets on Carolina have returned a profit of 1.32 units across eight games this season, compared with 1.90 units from backing Winnipeg across seven. Carolina won six of those games; Winnipeg won four. The Jets’ better return despite fewer wins shows why the price deserves as much attention as the standings, even though those returns came at earlier prices.
Winnipeg has an answer up front
The Jets lost 4-3 in overtime at Chicago on Thursday, but Kyle Connor scored on the power play and extended his point streak to four games. He had five goals and an assist across that stretch, while Neal Pionk contributed a goal and two assists in Chicago. Winnipeg has some genuine scoring momentum of its own, even if Carolina’s run has been more impressive.
Connor, Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti make up Winnipeg’s first forward line. With our projections giving the Jets fewer shots, that group’s production takes on extra importance. Winnipeg’s case is stronger if its leading forwards keep making their opportunities count rather than needing to match Carolina shot for shot.

Why the 6.5 total is less straightforward
Carolina’s scoring surge gives the 6.5-goal total some support, but its recent results also supply a counterweight. The Hurricanes have allowed two goals or fewer in five of their six straight wins. Across their last eight games this season, overs and unders are evenly split, while four of Winnipeg’s last seven have finished under their respective totals. Those results came against different scoring thresholds, so they’re useful context rather than a direct verdict on today’s 6.5.
Winnipeg’s expected goalie, Clay Stevenson, adds uncertainty to that picture. NHL.com’s matchup preview points to Stevenson, whose two appearances this season produced very different results: 29 saves on 31 shots against Pittsburgh, then 12 saves on 16 shots in relief against Anaheim. Two appearances don’t establish his usual level, but that contrast is worth weighing with Carolina projected to generate more shots.
Carolina’s sustained scoring and projected shooting advantage make the strongest case for the favorite. Winnipeg brings productive top-end forwards and the bigger potential payout, but its better historical returns alone don’t settle the value at today’s price. The key tension is whether those forwards can keep producing on fewer shots against a team that has repeatedly limited opponents to two goals or fewer. That goal prevention also makes 6.5 more demanding than Carolina’s scoring streak might first suggest: a strong Hurricanes attack doesn’t necessarily mean both teams will contribute heavily.
