Oklahoma just beat the nation’s then-No. 1 team, but its offense still has something to prove. That makes Saturday’s visit from No. 15 Kentucky interesting: the Sooners are 6.5-point favorites against a 5-1 team that has won four straight. The central question is whether Oklahoma can build enough sustained offense to make the most of the opportunities its defense creates.
A big win, with an important catch
Oklahoma edged Texas 27-24 on Saturday, winning on Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal as time expired. But the Sooners gained only 238 yards and scored just one offensive touchdown. A blocked-punt recovery in the end zone and Peyton Bowen’s interception return supplied their other two touchdowns.
John Mateer completed 18 of 26 passes for 155 yards. He also delivered when it mattered, finding Isaiah Sategna for gains of 13 and 20 yards on the winning possession. That’s a useful distinction for this matchup: Oklahoma showed it could finish a game, but seven three-and-outs left plenty of room for improvement between those decisive moments.
Our grades give Oklahoma’s defense an A+, compared with Kentucky’s A-, while both offenses receive an A-. That defensive advantage supports the Sooners’ favorite status in our assessment. Covering nearly a touchdown, though, puts more pressure on their offense to contribute than simply finding a way to win.
Kentucky’s ground game faces a tougher outlook
Kentucky beat LSU 35-34 in overtime on Saturday, with Kenneth Minchey’s two-point conversion completing the win. Minchey threw for 246 yards, including 206 after halftime, while C.J. Baxter rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Baxter’s 77-yard run on Kentucky’s first play accounted for much of that rushing production.
Our projections put Kentucky at roughly 70 rushing yards and 190 passing yards against Oklahoma. That makes the run game a particularly important test: if the Wildcats struggle to get much from the ground attack, Minchey’s ability to generate another productive passing stretch becomes more important. His second-half performance against LSU gives Kentucky a concrete reason for optimism, even against a defense we rate highly.
The Wildcats have also covered the spread in five of six games this season. Flat one-unit spread bets on Kentucky across those six games returned a historical profit of 3.54 units. They’ve been competitive relative to expectations, although those results came at different spreads than Saturday’s.

Why the 43.5 total deserves a closer look
The current DraftKings total is 43.5, and the scoring evidence pulls in different directions. Five of Kentucky’s six games this season have gone over their posted totals; three of Oklahoma’s five have gone under. Those contrasting histories make more sense when paired with how the teams have produced their points.
Kentucky just showed it can generate offense against LSU, but our projections call for only about 260 total yards this week. We project Oklahoma for about 320 yards, an improvement on its output against Texas rather than an overwhelming offensive performance. That modest yardage outlook puts the focus on scoring efficiency at 43.5, rather than simply carrying last week’s final scores forward. Oklahoma’s two non-offensive touchdowns against Texas are an important counterweight: disruption can add points even when sustained drives are scarce.
The main test is sustained offense
Oklahoma’s strongest case rests on its defense limiting Kentucky’s rushing production. Kentucky’s counter is Minchey’s demonstrated ability to lift the passing game and a season of strong results against the spread. The most useful thing to watch is whether the Sooners can turn defensive stops into productive possessions of their own. That would strengthen their position as favorites without requiring another pair of touchdowns from defense and special teams.
