Buffalo brings the stronger attacking grade; Toronto brings the better recent numbers from its expected goalie. That split makes Thursday’s Sabres–Maple Leafs matchup more interesting than their identical 3-3-1 records suggest. With Toronto only a slight favorite, Buffalo’s modest shooting advantage has to be weighed against the Leafs’ stronger recent work in net.
A close price, with different strengths
The current moneylines at DraftKings have Toronto at -118 and Buffalo at -102, a narrow separation that fits our matching B- overall grades. Underneath those grades, though, the teams look different: we give Buffalo’s attack a B compared with Toronto’s B-, while the Leafs hold the stronger defensive grade, B- to C.
Our shot projections give Buffalo about 28 shots on goal and Toronto about 26. That’s a modest shooting-volume advantage for the Sabres, rather than a picture of one team overwhelming the other. It gives Buffalo a plausible route to winning this matchup, but the expected goalies make those opportunities worth a closer look.
Buffalo also has a personnel concern to monitor: Rasmus Dahlin is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Olen Zellweger scored twice as the Sabres rallied before losing 4-3 in a shootout at Montreal on Tuesday. That was a welcome scoring contribution from the blue line, although Dahlin’s availability remains an important part of Buffalo’s matchup picture.
The goalie comparison complicates the scoring outlook
The expected goalie matchup pairs Toronto’s Sergei Bobrovsky with Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Bobrovsky has a .907 save percentage across his four most recent appearances for the Leafs this season and allowed three goals in each. Luukkonen has an .850 save percentage across his five most recent appearances for Buffalo, including one in relief.
Luukkonen’s latest outing was considerably stronger than that five-game sample: he stopped 35 of 38 shots against Montreal. That’s a meaningful counterweight to the early numbers. A repeat of Tuesday’s work would give Buffalo more room to turn its modest projected shot advantage into a winning performance.

The sportsbook total is 6.5 goals. Toronto’s last four games have all gone over their respective totals, returning 3.19 units from flat one-unit Over bets. The Leafs most recently lost 5-4 at Utah on Tuesday, with Auston Matthews, Jack Roslovic and John Tavares among their scorers. Anthony Stolarz was in net for that loss, so its five goals allowed aren’t part of Bobrovsky’s recent record.
Toronto’s scoring run and Luukkonen’s uneven early results give the 6.5 total some genuine tension. Bobrovsky’s stronger save percentage points the other way, and the small projected shot gap doesn’t suggest a lopsided shooting matchup. The useful distinction is between the Leafs’ recent high-scoring games and the goalie matchup they face here: Luukkonen’s latest performance gives Buffalo a firmer answer than his five-appearance average alone would suggest.
What matters most
Buffalo’s stronger attacking grade and modest projected shot advantage make Toronto’s small favorite status worth scrutinizing. The Leafs’ clearest counterweight is Bobrovsky’s stronger recent save percentage. For both the moneyline and the 6.5 total, Luukkonen’s ability to build on Tuesday’s 35-save outing matters more than simply extending Toronto’s four-game Over streak. That leaves a close matchup with competing strengths—not a case where one recent trend settles the betting outlook.
