Utah is favored against Tampa Bay on Saturday, but the Mammoth have a problem worth watching: their expected goalie has struggled lately, and the Lightning bring an attack we rate highly. Tampa Bay has its own hurdle, arriving after a Friday night loss in Colorado. That makes this matchup more interesting than a simple comparison of two seven-win teams: Utah’s schedule advantage and stronger defensive grade face a serious test against the Lightning’s attack.
Utah’s price meets Tampa Bay’s attacking threat
At -142 in DraftKings’ current moneyline market, Utah needs more than home ice to make its case against Tampa Bay at +120. The Lightning have won seven of their last 10 games, although Colorado ended their three-game winning streak Friday. Jake Guentzel scored twice in the 6-3 defeat, giving Tampa Bay something positive to carry into the second half of this road back-to-back.
Our grades capture the tension in the matchup. Tampa Bay earns an A- for its attack, compared with Utah’s B. The Mammoth have the better defensive assessment, B to C+, while both teams receive a B overall. There’s a credible case for Utah’s more balanced profile, but Tampa Bay’s scoring threat makes the home favorite’s assignment uncomfortable.
The Lightning also have a personnel concern: defenseman Victor Hedman is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. His availability is worth watching, though that status doesn’t establish that he’ll miss Saturday’s game.
Winning and betting value haven’t been the same thing for Tampa Bay this season. Its seven wins in 10 games have produced a historical profit of just 0.74 units from flat one-unit moneyline bets. That’s useful context here: a strong record alone doesn’t tell you whether a particular price is attractive.
The goalie matchup complicates a 6.5 total
Karel Vejmelka is Utah’s expected starter. Across his five most recent appearances, all this season, he has stopped 97 of 113 shots for an .858 save percentage. He allowed four goals on 22 shots in Thursday’s 5-3 loss at Seattle. Utah fought back from 3-1 down to tie that game, with Logan Cooley scoring twice, but the Mammoth couldn’t finish the comeback.
Those recent goalie results matter against Tampa Bay’s highly rated attack, particularly with the sportsbook total at 6.5. Seven of Utah’s 11 games this season have gone over their respective totals, returning 1.95 units from historical flat one-unit Over bets. That scoring history gives the posted number context, though it spans different opponents and game conditions.

There’s a meaningful counterweight in Tampa Bay’s expected goalie, Dennis Hildeby. He has allowed two goals in each of his two appearances this season, stopping 46 of 50 shots for a .920 save percentage. It’s a much smaller sample than Vejmelka’s, but it offers a reason not to assume Utah’s recent high-scoring games will carry straight into this matchup.
Our shooting projections also point to a fairly even workload: roughly 29 shots for Tampa Bay and 28 for Utah, with about three power-play opportunities apiece. Neither team has a large projected shot-volume advantage. At 6.5, the more useful tension is between Tampa Bay’s attacking quality and Vejmelka’s recent results on one side, and Utah’s stronger defensive assessment and Hildeby’s encouraging but limited sample on the other.
What matters most
Utah has the home setting, an extra day between games and the stronger defensive grade. Tampa Bay counters with the better attacking grade and a goalie whose brief season sample has been effective. The strongest case for the favorite is that its defense can limit the Lightning’s opportunities enough to ease the pressure on Vejmelka. His recent results are the main concern, especially with no large projected shooting advantage to separate the teams. For bettors assessing Utah’s price, that defensive matchup deserves more weight than either team’s win total alone; at 6.5, Hildeby’s small sample also keeps the scoring outlook from being a one-sided story.
