Lightning vs. Rangers: Tampa Bay’s rebound meets New York’s home success

Tampa Bay has won four straight since New York handed it a 5-1 loss on October 1. That rebound gives the Lightning a stronger case as the betting favorite in this rematch, but the Rangers have won their first four home games. Dylan Garand’s recent goaltending adds another counterweight to Tampa Bay’s stronger grades and expected shooting volume.

Tampa Bay’s rebound has more than one source

The Lightning beat the Islanders 5-3 on Saturday, with Brandon Hagel scoring a hat trick and Jake Guentzel adding two goals. Hagel broke a 3-3 tie with 1:44 left before adding an empty-net goal. It was a strong finish, though Tampa Bay had also let a two-goal lead slip away.

That production matters because Hagel and Guentzel skate with Anthony Cirelli on Tampa Bay’s second line. The Rangers’ challenge extends beyond the first-line pairing of Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov. Across the Lightning’s four consecutive wins, they’ve scored at least three goals each time and allowed only one or two in three of those games.

Our shot projections give Tampa Bay about 28 shots to New York’s 25—a modest volume advantage, with the quality of those chances still important. Our grades also favor the Lightning: we rate their attack B+ and their defensive unit A-, compared with C and B- for the Rangers. Together, those assessments support taking Tampa Bay’s rebound seriously rather than treating the first meeting as the whole story.

The Rangers have a real counterweight

New York beat Vancouver 6-2 on Sunday, with Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle scoring twice each. Garand made 19 saves, while J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad each supplied two assists. The Rangers have scored at least four goals in each of their four home wins, including that earlier victory over Tampa Bay.

Garand’s recent save performance is particularly relevant to the Lightning’s expected shot advantage. He has stopped 52 of 55 shots across his three recent appearances, including relief work, for a .945 save percentage. Andrei Vasilevskiy has stopped 74 of 83 across his four recent appearances, a .892 mark. Both samples are small, but Garand has supplied a concrete reason not to dismiss New York simply because our team evaluations favor the visitors.

The current moneyline at DraftKings makes Tampa Bay a -162 favorite, with New York at +136. Both teams have rewarded outright backers so far: betting one unit on each game this season returned a profit of 1.21 units across Tampa Bay’s five games and 2.15 units across New York’s seven. That’s useful context for two successful early-season teams, but today’s price still deserves its own assessment.

What matters at a 5.5-goal total

The latest total is 5.5, and the scoring evidence pulls in both directions. Each team’s most recent game produced eight goals, and both Guentzel and Alexis Lafreniere scored on the power play in those wins. New York’s home scoring has also been consistently productive so far.

The counterweight is that our shot projections suggest moderate volume, while Garand has allowed only three goals across his three recent appearances. Vasilevskiy’s lower save percentage in his recent sample adds uncertainty on the other side. Tampa Bay’s results offer another check: three of its five games this season finished Under their respective sportsbook totals, while four of New York’s seven went Over. At 5.5, the useful distinction is whether the attacks can sustain their recent production against this goalie matchup—not simply whether the last two games were high-scoring.

The rematch is closer than the grades alone suggest

Tampa Bay’s four-game response, scoring from its second line and projected shot advantage give bettors more to work with than the first meeting alone. New York answers with productive home performances and Garand’s encouraging early saves. The strongest case for the Lightning is the combination of scoring depth and extra shooting volume; the main counterweight is how well Garand has handled his recent chances. Whether Tampa Bay can turn that modest volume advantage into meaningful scoring is the detail worth weighing alongside the favorite’s price, rather than leaning on either the grade gap or the earlier 5-1 result alone.
