Minnesota’s recent wins have come with very little scoring at the other end, but Saturday brings a different goaltending setup. Calvin Pickard is confirmed to face Tampa Bay after Jesper Wallstedt handled Friday’s victory over San Jose. That change is central to a matchup between two teams coming off 4–1 wins: how much of the Wild’s low-scoring pattern should carry into this game?
The Wild’s winning formula gets a different test
AP reported that Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and three assists against the Sharks, with Quinn Hughes contributing a goal and two assists. Minnesota scored twice with the man advantage; Kaprizov set up Maxim Shabanov’s go-ahead finish with a pass across the slot. Wallstedt stopped 23 shots.
The useful distinction is that Minnesota didn’t need a quiet offensive night to finish below the total. Its games have gone under in 13 of 18 this season, and the Wild’s three-game winning streak has included just four goals allowed. Strong scoring from Kaprizov and Hughes can coexist with a restrained game total when the other team gets little back.
Pickard’s available sample offers less reassurance. In his two October starts in our goalie logs for Minnesota, he stopped 35 of 42 shots, an .833 save percentage, and allowed seven goals. Two starts are far too few to define what he’ll do Saturday, but they do make the goalie matchup worth considering separately from Minnesota’s team trend. The Wild are playing for the second consecutive night; Tampa Bay last played Thursday.
Tampa Bay brings more than its headline scorers
AP reported that Ilya Mikheyev scored twice against Chicago, with Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh also scoring in Tampa Bay’s Thursday win. Hedman’s opening goal came on the power play. That took the Lightning to eight wins in eight home games; Saturday starts a road trip, where that record offers a less direct guide.
Andrei Vasilevskiy is the projected Tampa Bay starter, with confirmation still pending. He allowed three goals across his two most recent starts, following outings of four, four and five goals allowed in the preceding three. The recent improvement gives Tampa Bay a counterweight to Minnesota’s offensive production, though the full five-start stretch has been uneven.
Minnesota’s forward availability also bears watching. Michael McCarron is questionable after leaving Friday’s game, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic. Russo’s Friday reports described possible Saturday availability for Marcus and Nick Foligno; neither established a return or workload.

Why the total deserves its own look
DraftKings’ moneyline lists Tampa Bay at -142 and Minnesota at +120, with a total of 6.5 in Saturday morning’s snapshot. The visitors are favored despite Minnesota’s three straight wins. Tampa Bay has scored four goals in each of its last two games, and Pickard’s limited recent work gives that offense a different test from the one Wallstedt supplied Friday. Minnesota’s power-play production is the counterweight: the Wild have ways to challenge the favorite beyond relying on another low-scoring defensive performance.
The competing evidence matters. Minnesota’s season-long under pattern is substantial, while Tampa Bay’s games have gone over in eight of 15. Our shot projections are close to 29 for each team, offering no large volume gap; they don’t establish chance quality or how either goalie will perform. Minnesota’s productive power play and Pickard’s small sample make a simple replay of Friday’s result an incomplete way to assess the threshold.
Sharpest Bets gives the side one star and the total three stars. The scoring question deserves the closer look: Minnesota’s under history is meaningful context, but Saturday brings a confirmed change in net against an offense coming off consecutive four-goal games. Keep that change alongside the Wild’s special-teams threat when assessing 6.5.
