San Diego has won nine of its last 10 games and the first two meetings of this series, so it’s easy to understand why the Padres are favored Sunday. The more interesting question is whether that form justifies a -156 moneyline against Sandy Alcantara.
Game time, venue and current odds
The Miami Marlins visit the San Diego Padres at 4:10 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Petco Park. The forecast calls for cloudy conditions and a temperature around 76 degrees.
The latest DraftKings moneyline lists San Diego at -156 and Miami at +129. The total is 8, with the over priced at -113 and the under at -106.
San Diego’s form makes the favorite case
The Padres have won nine of their last 10 games, while the Marlins are 4-6 over the same stretch. San Diego also owns the stronger season record at 86-69, compared with Miami’s 76-79 mark.
Saturday’s game showed why the matchup may not be as comfortable as those records suggest. Miami built an early lead and Griffin Conine forced extra innings with a tying homer in the ninth, but Ethan Salas delivered a walk-off single in the 10th for a 7-6 Padres win. San Diego has now won 12 of 13, according to the AP’s recap.
Alcantara still has plenty to work through in San Diego’s confirmed lineup, including Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Ty France, Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts. Our projections don’t show a huge separation in basic hit volume—both clubs land at about eight hits—but they give San Diego a small edge in total bases, roughly 13 to 12. That suggests a competitive offensive matchup rather than an obvious mismatch.
Alcantara is Miami’s clearest counterweight
Alcantara is scheduled to face Walker Buehler in the starting-pitching matchup. The AP listed Alcantara at 13-10 with a 3.85 ERA and Buehler at 8-6 with a 4.58 ERA entering the finale.
That gives Miami a plausible route to keeping the game tight despite San Diego’s stronger record and recent run. The Marlins scored six times Saturday, with Otto Lopez homering early and Conine producing the late equalizer, but they managed only two runs in Friday’s 8-2 loss.
Recent scoring offers some context for the total without settling the matchup. Nine of San Diego’s last 10 games have gone over, with the other landing on the number, while seven of Miami’s last 10 have gone over. Both games in this series also cleared totals of 7.5, but Sunday’s number has moved to 8 and Alcantara presents a different starting-pitching test.

Final assessment
San Diego’s case rests on sustained form, the better overall record and a lineup that our projections expect to produce slightly more total-base damage despite nearly identical hit totals. Alcantara’s season ERA and Miami’s six-run effort Saturday are the clearest counterweights.
The price ultimately turns on whether the Padres can convert that modest extra-base edge into runs against Alcantara. If he limits the damage, Miami can keep the favorite under pressure; if San Diego gets to him early, its deep lineup and current form become much more difficult to overcome.
