Minnesota’s first road trip brings a clear challenge: keep Washington’s passing game from taking control before the Gophers can settle in. The unbeaten Huskies have the more explosive offensive profile and are favored by 10 points, but their early-season results against the spread make the price more interesting than the records alone suggest.
Washington’s passing game sets the terms
Demond Williams Jr. completed 27 of 33 passes for 373 yards and four touchdowns in Washington’s 48-16 win over Eastern Washington. The Huskies scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives, and Dezmen Roebuck finished with nine catches for 121 yards.
That performance fits the clearest difference in our yardage projections. Washington comes in at about 409 total yards, including roughly 264 through the air, while Minnesota projects closer to 251 total yards and 174 passing yards. The gap illustrates how much more room the Huskies appear to have for sustained offense.
Washington also projects for about 145 rushing yards, compared with roughly 77 for Minnesota. If the Huskies can make the Gophers defend the full field instead of concentrating on Williams and the passing game, creating favorable third-down situations will become much harder for the visitors.
Minnesota needs more than last week’s final score
Minnesota rebounded from its loss to Mississippi State with a 41-7 win over Akron. Drake Lindsey threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns, although 154 of the Gophers’ 191 rushing yards came in the fourth quarter while they were running out the clock.
That makes offensive balance an important part of this matchup. Minnesota can’t count on Washington’s passing game staying quiet for long, so the Gophers need drives that produce points, control possession and prevent the Huskies from settling into a rhythm. Lindsey’s three-touchdown performance was encouraging, but Washington represents a substantial step up from Akron.
There’s still a source of volatility for the home team. Washington committed eight penalties for 101 yards against Eastern Washington, including five that handed the Eagles first downs. Those mistakes didn’t prevent a comfortable win, but they could give an underdog extra chances if they carry into conference play.

How the spread fits the matchup
DraftKings has Washington favored by 10 points. That line asks bettors to weigh Washington’s considerable offensive advantage against a double-digit number.
Washington is 3-0 straight up but has yet to cover this season, while Minnesota is 2-1 both outright and against the spread. Those early-season results against the spread provide useful pricing context, but three games remain a small sample—especially with Washington stepping into Big Ten play for the first time this season.
Final assessment
Washington’s passing game and projected yardage advantage form the strongest case in this matchup. Minnesota’s counterweights are its ability to sustain drives and the possibility that Washington’s penalties create extra possessions or shorter fields. The factor that matters most is whether the Gophers can limit explosive passes without conceding easy production on the ground; if they can’t, the Huskies have several ways to make a 10-point margin feel manageable.
