Nuggets vs. Pacers preview: Can Indiana disrupt Denver’s passing?

Denver turned a halftime deficit into a rout by dominating one quarter against Toronto. Indiana ended a five-game losing streak by forcing mistakes and surviving a tight finish in Memphis. Those are two different ways to take control, and they frame Saturday’s neutral-site meeting at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. The Nuggets have the stronger offensive profile; the Pacers’ most useful counter is the disruptive defense that gave their offense extra chances in their latest win.

Denver’s passing gives Indiana a difficult assignment

Nikola Jokic finished with 32 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in Denver’s 128–109 win over Toronto. Six teammates also reached double figures, including rookie Bryce Hopkins with 18 off the bench. As AP reported via ESPN, Denver trailed by three at halftime before winning the third quarter 41–15.

The variety of contributors matters as much as the headline triple-double. Indiana has to contend with Jokic’s own scoring while preventing his passing from turning several other players into productive options. Against Toronto, Denver found both routes to points. Indiana’s challenge is to make the Nuggets work for those openings throughout the game.

DraftKings lists Denver as a 7.5-point favorite. Our team grades support an offensive advantage for the Nuggets: B+ against Indiana’s C, with the Pacers carrying a D on defense. Denver’s own defensive grade is C+, leaving room for Indiana to keep the contest competitive if it can generate good possessions consistently.

Denver is 4–3 this season but 3–4 against the spread. Indiana is 3–6 overall and 5–4 against the number. The Nuggets have won more often, but the Pacers have more often stayed within their posted spreads. For Denver, the task is to keep building an advantage rather than rely on another decisive burst.

The Pacers need the turnovers to keep coming

According to AP’s report on ESPN, Indiana forced eight Memphis turnovers in the first quarter and 12 by halftime, turning those first-half mistakes into 16 points. Andrew Nembhard scored 22, Pascal Siakam added 20 and Aaron Nesmith supplied the late corner three that secured a 107–103 win.

That is a useful way for the Pacers to challenge Denver’s offensive advantage: create possessions before having to defend another complete sequence. The Memphis win came after five consecutive losses, so the next step is making that disruption repeatable against a team with several scoring options. Indiana’s D defensive grade keeps one good result in perspective.

Our projections put Denver at roughly 12 turnovers and Indiana at 14, with about 30 assists for the Nuggets and 28 for the Pacers. Denver’s full-game turnover forecast is about what Memphis gave away in the first half alone. That makes the latest win a useful model for Indiana’s approach, but a demanding benchmark to repeat.

Jokic's assists market is set at 9.5, bringing that passing contest into focus after his 11-assist game against Toronto. Indiana has to interrupt the connections, not just make Jokic give up the ball; Denver’s other scorers still have to finish the chances he creates.

A total pulled in different directions

The total is 229.5 points. Denver’s seven games this season have produced four overs and three unders; Indiana’s nine have produced three overs and six unders. The Pacers’ latest three games all went under, and they scored 90, 104 and 107 points in those contests. That recent scoring is an important counterweight to assuming Denver’s latest offensive outburst will carry the entire matchup into a high total.

There is also a distinction between forcing turnovers and automatically producing a higher-scoring game. Mistakes can give Indiana easier chances while taking scoring opportunities away from Denver. The total depends on what follows those exchanges, including whether the Nuggets can keep finding multiple scorers and whether the Pacers can turn disruption into reliable offense.

Friday’s reports described Denver's DeMar DeRozan as probable with a back issue and Indiana's Kelly Oubre Jr. as questionable with a calf injury. The projected starting lineups remain unconfirmed, leaving the exact rotation unsettled.

Indiana’s best response in Memphis began with its defense, but the Pacers still needed a late shot to finish the job. In Mexico City, creating mistakes will be only half the test: they also need enough offense to keep Denver’s range of scorers from gradually pulling away. For the Nuggets, taking care of the ball would make Indiana solve the harder problem of stopping a complete possession.
