Pacers–Heat: Miami’s Frontcourt Gets a New Test

Miami’s first win offered a much clearer picture of what this team can do: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo each scored 24 points, and the Heat piled up 70 points in the paint. Now Indiana arrives without Ivica Zubac, giving Friday’s matchup an obvious area to watch. The harder question is whether Miami can turn that encouraging night into the sustained advantage an 8.5-point favorite needs.

The Heat found something to build on

Miami beat Atlanta 129-117 on Wednesday after losing its first four games. Antetokounmpo added 18 rebounds to his scoring, while Adebayo grabbed nine. Andrew Wiggins supplied 18 points, and the Heat shot 53% from the field.

The inside scoring matters more to this matchup than the relief of ending a losing streak. Indiana has ruled Zubac out for Friday with an ankle injury. His absence puts the Pacers’ response to Miami’s frontcourt at the center of the game, although Wednesday’s 70 paint points came against Atlanta and shouldn’t become an automatic expectation here.

Our projections put Miami at about 48 rebounds and Indiana at about 40. That describes a meaningful expected gap on the boards, alongside the recent work from Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. For Indiana, keeping that gap manageable would help prevent Miami’s frontcourt from setting the terms of the game.

There is still a substantial caution around the spread. Wednesday was Miami’s first cover as well as its first win this season. A strong performance in Atlanta is an encouraging starting point, but the Heat have yet to put together consecutive wins through five games.

Indiana showed a way to compete

The Pacers lost 114-109 to Philadelphia on Wednesday, dropping to 2-3, but they did more than hang around. Indiana opened the third quarter with 17 unanswered points and led 88-75 entering the fourth before Philadelphia recovered. That sequence offers both sides of the Pacers’ case: they could create a sizable lead, but couldn’t protect it.

Andrew Nembhard finished with 18 points and 14 assists after returning from neck soreness, while Pascal Siakam had 26 points and 11 rebounds. Nembhard’s passing gives Indiana a useful recent example of offense coming from distribution as well as individual scoring. Siakam’s production provides another reason Miami can’t treat Zubac’s absence as the whole story.

Thursday’s reports call Nembhard probable with the neck issue and Aaron Nesmith probable with a hamstring concern. Nembhard and Nesmith give Indiana two important availability updates to follow, especially with Zubac already out. Indiana has covered in three of its five games, including Wednesday’s defeat, a reminder that its uneven win-loss record doesn’t fully describe how it has performed against the spread.

Can Indiana contribute enough at 237.5?

The total is 237.5. Miami’s interior production and our B offensive grade for the Heat make its scoring a clear part of that discussion, particularly against an Indiana defense we grade D+. But a high-scoring Miami night is only part of the equation.

Indiana scored 102 and 109 in its two most recent losses, after putting up 136 against Brooklyn on Sunday. That variation makes the Pacers’ offensive contribution a key uncertainty at this threshold. Both teams have gone under in three of five games this season; Miami’s 129-point breakthrough supplies a counterweight, rather than a reason to assume the earlier pattern will continue.

The strongest case for Miami is its frontcourt production meeting an Indiana team missing its center, with a substantial rebounding difference in our projections. The strongest response is the offense Nembhard and Siakam just produced, plus Miami’s limited evidence of sustained success. Watch whether Indiana can keep generating productive possessions while competing on the boards: that combination matters to both the spread and the scoring outlook.
