Milwaukee has the stronger overall profile, but its 3-2 win in the NLDS opener left San Diego within reach. The Brewers’ lineup and pitching grades explain why they’re favored again. Michael King and a capable Padres lineup supply the counterweight, with Milwaukee’s ability to build innings against King shaping the next test.
Milwaukee’s advantage goes beyond the opener
The Brewers finished the regular season 103-59, compared with San Diego’s 91-71, and have won nine of their last 10 games. Our grades give Milwaukee an A- for both its lineup and pitching, compared with a B+ lineup and B pitching grade for the Padres. That’s a broader case for the Brewers than one close postseason result.
Still, San Diego has won seven of its last 10. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill are part of a lineup whose B+ grade is the strongest element of the Padres’ team profile. Milwaukee has the higher grades, but San Diego brings enough hitting strength to make Logan Henderson’s outing a meaningful test.
King and Henderson set the early test
DraftKings’ pitcher strikeout lines sit at 6.5 for Henderson and 5.5 for King. Henderson also has the higher outs-recorded line, 16.5 versus 15.5. Those higher thresholds give San Diego’s hitters a useful benchmark: extending innings against Henderson would challenge the workload reflected in his market.
Our walk projections put Milwaukee at roughly four and San Diego at roughly three. Both clubs project fewer than one home run, so there’s more to the scoring outlook than power alone. Keeping Milwaukee’s free passes down would give King a better chance to avoid innings with multiple runners aboard; the Padres, meanwhile, need to create their own opportunities against Henderson.

What the favorite’s price asks of Milwaukee
The current moneyline makes Milwaukee a -143 favorite at DraftKings. Its record, recent results and stronger grades explain that position, but the price still matters: a more complete team profile doesn’t erase San Diego’s capable lineup or the competitive opener.
Milwaukee’s strongest case is the combination of better lineup and pitching grades, backed by nine wins in 10 games. San Diego’s answer is a productive recent stretch and enough hitting talent to test Henderson. The clearest pressure point is extra baserunners against King: if Milwaukee builds those longer innings, its lineup has more chances to make the broader advantage count. If King limits them, the Padres have a more manageable task at the plate.
