Red Sox vs. Yankees Preview: A Wild Card Opener Without Aaron Judge

New York has enough pitching and lineup depth to justify a modest home price, but this Wild Card opener gets much tighter once Aaron Judge is removed from the equation. Boston’s pitching grades well, our projected hit totals are nearly even, and the starting matchup puts plenty of pressure on the rest of the Yankees’ order to supply the missing power.

How much does Judge’s absence change the matchup?

Judge is on the 10-day injured list with a calf injury, and New York left him off its Wild Card Series roster. That removes a central bat from a lineup already facing a Boston club with an A pitching grade.

New York still owns the stronger overall profile. Our grades give the Yankees an A- overall mark, including A+ pitching, while Boston checks in at B+ overall with an A for pitching. The lineup gap is smaller, with New York graded B and Boston B-.

Our projections reinforce that narrower lineup comparison. Boston sits at 6.8 hits and New York at 6.5, while the Yankees hold the more meaningful power edge at roughly one home run to Boston’s 0.7. Without Judge, getting that power from the rest of the order becomes one of New York’s clearest swing factors.

Cam Schlittler and Payton Tolle put pitching at the center

Cam Schlittler starts for New York opposite Boston’s Payton Tolle. The pitcher-prop board sets Schlittler’s outs line at 17.5, two outs above Tolle’s 15.5, while their strikeout lines sit at 7.5 and 6.5. The market is asking Schlittler to work deeper and gives both starters substantial strikeout expectations.

That matters with the total sitting at 6. The teams have reached that number through very different recent scoring environments: across their last 10 games, eight Boston contests stayed under their posted totals, while nine New York games went over. Both clubs went 5-5 in those stretches, making the contrast in game shape more useful than a simple hot-team narrative.

What the moneyline is pricing

The latest moneyline makes New York a -139 favorite. That reflects a club with six more regular-season wins, home-field advantage and the better overall grade, but it’s still a restrained price. Boston’s pitching grade, the close projected hit totals and Judge’s absence help explain why the Yankees aren’t favored more aggressively.

New York’s strongest case starts with Schlittler, its deeper pitching grade and the remaining lineup’s ability to replace some of Judge’s power. Boston’s counter is a tight game in which Tolle prevents early separation and the Red Sox turn a nearly even hit count into timely scoring. The biggest factor is which starter controls the first two trips through the order; that should determine whether New York’s depth shows through or Boston keeps the opener within a narrow margin.
