Rockies vs. Tigers Preview: Is Detroit Worth -187?

Detroit is the better team on paper. That part is not complicated. The Tigers have the better record, much stronger grades and more projected production. The real question is whether all of that is already baked into a -187 moneyline.

DraftKings had Detroit at -187 and Colorado at +154, with the total at 8 runs as of 12:35 p.m. ET on Sept. 11. The Tigers have the clear edge. The price is where this gets interesting.

Why Detroit is such a big favorite

The records tell a pretty clear story. Detroit comes in at 67-79, while Colorado is 55-91. Our grades widen the gap: the Tigers carry a B overall grade, with a B lineup and B+ pitching grade. The Rockies are graded D- overall and for their lineup, with a D pitching grade.

The team-stat projections lean the same way. Detroit is projected for 8.8 hits and 15.0 total bases, compared with 7.2 hits and 11.3 total bases for Colorado. In plain English, the Tigers should create more traffic and have a better chance to do damage when they get runners on.

Players who can shape this game

Framber Valdez and Mason Adams offer the clearest player-level contrast. On the starting-pitcher board, Valdez has a 17.5-out line and a 4.5-strikeout line. Adams sits at 14.5 outs and 3.5 strikeouts. Both earned-runs lines are 2.5, but the under is priced much more heavily for Valdez (-170) than for Adams (-118). Those numbers do not decide the game, but they help explain Detroit’s stronger pitching grade.

The top of each lineup is worth a look, too. Kevin McGonigle and Gleyber Torres have the shortest prices to record a hit for Detroit, at -265 and -258. Jake McCarthy (-237) and Hunter Goodman (-217) stand out for Colorado. Think of those prices as a quick map of the key bats, not four separate betting recommendations.

One injury note worth knowing

Colorado pitcher Sean Sullivan remains on the 15-day IL with a shoulder injury. A Sept. 11 update noted that he had started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque, striking out four and allowing one run in 1.2 innings. It is not a direct change to tonight’s listed matchup, but it is useful context for the Rockies’ pitching depth.

Recent form is a little messier

Colorado has dropped four straight and is just 3-7 over its last 10 games. Detroit has been better, but 4-6 over its own 10-game stretch is hardly dominant.

The total does not give us a clean signal either. Colorado split its last 10 over/under results 5-5, while Detroit finished 6-4 to the over. That is a mixed bag around a total of 8.

The bottom line

Detroit deserves to be favored. The better record, stronger grades and projected lineup production all explain the gap between these teams. But -187 asks bettors to pay for nearly every bit of that advantage.

So the matchup is straightforward; the price is not. Detroit looks stronger, but that does not automatically make the moneyline cheap.
