SMU and Syracuse both won after trailing at halftime last Saturday, but their recoveries took very different shapes. The Mustangs buried Cal with a sustained touchdown surge. The Orange needed a late rally and an overtime two-point conversion at North Carolina. Their meeting now tests whether SMU can turn its stronger passing outlook into separation against a Syracuse team that has been competitive against the spread lately.
SMU’s surge came after an uneven start
SMU, now ranked No. 19, beat Cal 59-20 after trailing 20-17 at halftime. The Mustangs scored touchdowns on their first six possessions after the break and gained 306 of their 492 yards in the second half. Kevin Jennings threw three touchdown passes, while Kendrick Raphael ran for 104 yards and accounted for three scores.
That was a convincing finish, yet it is worth keeping the earlier games in view. Before facing Cal, SMU beat Virginia 23-13, Boston College 25-16 and Missouri State 34-24. The Mustangs have won four straight, but only the latest of those wins came with a large margin. Saturday offers a road test after all four of those victories came at home.
Syracuse beat North Carolina 31-30 in overtime after entering the fourth quarter down 20-10. Steve Angeli threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, Ahmad Miller ran for 125 yards, and Calvin Russell III caught both the overtime touchdown and the winning conversion. Umari Hatcher’s 76-yard touchdown catch helped start the comeback. The finish showed Syracuse could recover, but also how much it had left to do late.
The passing comparison favors the road favorite
DraftKings makes SMU a 10-point favorite. Our projections have the Mustangs producing about 312 passing yards to Syracuse’s 209. The rushing outlook is much closer, about 153 yards for SMU and 157 for the Orange. That puts the clearest projected difference through the air, rather than giving SMU a substantial advantage in every part of the attack.
The first-down outlook is closer too, roughly 24 for the Mustangs and 22 for Syracuse. The Orange’s rushing contribution gives them a plausible way to keep drives moving, while SMU’s passing advantage offers the favorite a route to more production. Neither requires assuming last week’s comeback or touchdown streak will happen again.
Syracuse has covered three consecutive spreads, including losses to Virginia and Louisville before the win at North Carolina. SMU is 6-1 outright but has two covers, three losses against the spread and two pushes this season. Those are useful reminders that a successful season and consistent separation from opponents are different things. The Orange are 3-4, yet their recent competitiveness deserves weight alongside SMU’s more imposing record.

Two strong finishes meet a 58.5 total
Syracuse’s last four games have gone Over their respective totals, and SMU just scored 59 points by itself. The passing outlook and both teams’ latest recoveries give a higher-scoring case substance.
The counterweight is the scoring before those finishes. SMU’s three preceding games all went Under, while Syracuse needed overtime to reach its latest final score. Today’s 58.5 is also higher than the totals in each of Syracuse’s four recent Overs. A repeat of the late offensive bursts would help scoring, but the posted number asks for enough production across the full game, not just another dramatic ending.
SMU has the clearer passing advantage and the stronger overall results. Syracuse’s near-even rushing projection and recent covers make it a credible challenge to comfortable separation. The key test is whether the Mustangs can sustain their passing production on the road before they need another second-half rescue.
