Thunder’s unbeaten start meets an injury test against Phoenix

Oklahoma City is 3-0, but its biggest question against Phoenix is who will be available after an injury-filled Sunday night. The Thunder enter Monday as 10.5-point favorites at DraftKings despite three players getting hurt against the Clippers, including Jalen Williams. Their defense gives that favorite status a strong foundation; whether they can create comfortable separation against a Suns team coming off Devin Booker’s 43-point night is the more interesting test.

A win that came with a cost

The Thunder beat the Clippers 108-101 on Sunday behind 34 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. But the win brought injury concerns: Jalen Williams left late with an apparent left ankle injury, while Cason Wallace departed with left shoulder soreness and Jaylin Williams with right wrist soreness. Wallace and Jaylin Williams did not return. How those injuries affect Monday’s availability is the key follow-up.

That matters with Oklahoma City playing on consecutive nights. There was an encouraging contribution beyond Gilgeous-Alexander: Ajay Mitchell scored 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, with six rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes. That’s useful production to carry forward, though one good outing doesn’t settle how the Thunder will handle any availability changes.

Booker’s rebound meets a tougher defensive test

Phoenix has already shown two very different scoring performances. The Suns scored just 83 points in a 124-83 opening loss at Portland, then beat Golden State 131-122 on Saturday. Booker drove that turnaround with 43 points on 17-of-25 shooting, plus seven assists and seven rebounds. Golden State was resting several key players, so that performance came against a short-handed opponent.

Our grades put Oklahoma City’s defense at A, compared with a B- for Phoenix’s offense. The Thunder have also held opponents to 104, 84 and 101 points across their first three games. That combination makes this a much different challenge for Booker than Saturday’s matchup.

The other end is less favorable for Oklahoma City: we grade its offense C+ against a Phoenix defense rated B. That’s another reason to separate confidence in the Thunder’s defense from expectations of an easy double-digit win, especially with their scoring support facing fresh injury concerns.

Phoenix does have a possible way to narrow the gap from outside: our projections give the Suns about 14 made threes against about 13 for Oklahoma City. The counterweight is ball security, with roughly 14 Phoenix turnovers against 12 for the Thunder. Extra three-point production would help the Suns keep pace, but giving away possessions could eat into that advantage.

What matters at a total of 219.5

The current total is 219.5, and Oklahoma City’s defensive start deserves weight in that discussion. All three Thunder games this season have finished under their respective totals. Still, those thresholds ranged from 223.5 to 236.5—each higher than Monday’s number—so this market is asking a different question.

Phoenix supplies the clearest counterweight to a straightforward low-scoring case: its scoring has swung sharply between two games, and Booker just showed how quickly he can change that picture. Oklahoma City’s more modest offensive grade and injuries complicate expectations for its scoring support. At 219.5, the useful comparison is the Thunder’s demonstrated ability to limit opponents against how much of Saturday’s offensive rebound Phoenix can sustain against stronger resistance.

Oklahoma City’s defense is the strongest supported reason to take the favorite seriously, but its offensive assessment is less convincing, and a back-to-back with fresh injury concerns makes comfortable separation harder to count on. For Phoenix, the clearest route to staying competitive is to turn its small projected advantage from outside into useful scoring without letting turnovers undo it. The availability of Oklahoma City’s injured players is the most important update for judging that double-digit assignment; for the total, the central test is whether Booker’s rebound holds up against a defense that has started much more convincingly than Golden State’s short-handed group.
