Indianapolis has the stronger attack in this matchup, but turning that advantage into a comfortable win is another matter. The Colts enter Sunday against winless Tennessee as seven-point favorites at DraftKings, fresh off a loss in which they moved the ball but repeatedly settled for field goals. For the Titans, the opening is clear: Indianapolis has defensive vulnerabilities, if Cam Ward and an offense coming off a three-point afternoon can take advantage.
The Colts need more from their productive drives
Daniel Jones threw for 267 yards in Indianapolis’ 34-22 loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday, while tight end Tyler Warren caught seven passes for 83 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Yet the Colts needed five field goals from Spencer Shrader, including three second-half kicks from 40 yards or closer. They created opportunities without getting enough touchdowns from them.
That distinction matters when Indianapolis needs to create separation to cover the spread. Our team projections put the Colts at roughly 320 total yards and 19 first downs, compared with about 275 yards and 16 first downs for Tennessee. That points toward a more productive Indianapolis attack, but not one that can afford to waste its best possessions.
Our grades capture the matchup’s imbalance: we give the Colts’ offense an A-, but their defense a D+. Jones, Jonathan Taylor and Warren give Indianapolis several ways to build drives. The defense is the counterweight, having just allowed Pittsburgh running back Jaylen Warren to produce 188 combined rushing and receiving yards and two long touchdowns. Still, the Colts held Washington to 13 points and Houston to 17 in their previous two games, so last Sunday’s breakdowns haven’t been the story every week.
Tennessee has an opening—and plenty to fix
The Titans fell to 0-5 when Houston beat them 26-3 last Sunday. Tennessee managed 187 total yards, Ward threw for 170, and the Texans forced two turnovers while recording four sacks. Against that backdrop, a vulnerable Colts defense is an opportunity rather than evidence that a rebound is already underway.
We grade Tennessee’s offense C-, so the central challenge is making Indianapolis defend sustained possessions rather than letting the Colts’ attack keep getting chances. Tennessee has covered twice in its five games this season despite losing all five; being competitive against the number and winning outright have been different tasks.
Two offensive contributors were limited in Wednesday’s practice: Colts receiver Josh Downs because of a hamstring injury and rest, and Titans running back Tyjae Spears because of a knee injury. Their availability matters to the options around Jones and Ward as these offenses look for more sustained drives.

What the 44.5-point total asks of these offenses
The posted total sits at 44.5, with competing forces underneath it. Indianapolis’ strong attack and defensive weaknesses create a route to scoring on both sides. Tennessee’s difficulty sustaining drives pulls the other way, as does the Colts’ failure to finish promising possessions with touchdowns against Pittsburgh. Indianapolis’ two lower-scoring defensive performances before that loss also temper the case for an easy scoring matchup.
At that total, Tennessee’s contribution is a key uncertainty. The Colts’ offense supplies the stronger foundation, but its finishing needs to improve to make the most of its chances. A few successful Titans possessions would also put more pressure on Indianapolis to turn its yardage advantage into touchdowns rather than simply control the game.
The clearest case for Indianapolis is its broader offensive production. The strongest counterweight is a defense that leaves Tennessee room to improve on last week, although the Titans still have to show they can sustain drives. For assessing the spread, the important distinction is between moving the ball and finishing possessions: the Colts showed they could do the first against Pittsburgh, but too many field goals left them short on the second. Tennessee’s ability to stay on the field determines how much pressure Indianapolis faces to make those chances count—and how much support there is for scoring at 44.5.
