The central question behind the latest DraftKings spread is whether Iowa State can establish its physical running game against a Utah defense that has made opponents one-dimensional. The Cyclones have the home field and a fresh example of their rushing ceiling, but the Utes present a much tougher test with the number sitting just beyond a touchdown.
Iowa State’s rushing surge gets a much tougher test
Iowa State piled up 365 rushing yards in its 55-7 win over Bowling Green, with Aiden Flora accounting for 194 yards on the ground. The Cyclones also scored on a punt return and a kickoff return, so the final margin reflected contributions well beyond the offense.
The resistance rises sharply here. Utah held Utah State to 58 rushing yards, recorded four sacks and allowed only one rushing first down in a 33-0 victory. That came one week after the Utes limited Arkansas to 61 yards on the ground.
Our yardage projections still give Iowa State room to run, putting the Cyclones near 167 rushing yards and about 355 total yards. Utah projects for roughly 440 total yards, including around 250 through the air and 185 on the ground. That balance matters because Iowa State’s clearest route to keeping the margin tight is sustaining drives rather than giving Utah repeated possessions.
What the spread is asking
The extra half-point beyond a touchdown raises the bar for Utah, especially after the Utes opened with three consecutive home games. Iowa State has already shown two very different offensive outcomes, scoring 55 against Bowling Green after managing 13 in a road loss to Iowa.
The early ATS results have rewarded both teams: Utah has covered in all three games, while Iowa State is 2-1 against the spread and covered as a 14-point underdog at Iowa. Those results help explain the market’s respect for each side, but this matchup asks the Cyclones to prove their preferred offensive style can work against Utah’s strongest unit.

The 47.5 total adds another layer to that run-game battle. Neither defense has allowed more than 16 points in a game this season, making manageable down-and-distance situations especially important for Iowa State. If Utah consistently forces obvious passing downs, the Cyclones’ projected output of around 188 passing yards leaves little room for empty possessions.
Final assessment
Utah brings the cleaner early results, the stronger recent work against the run and an advantage in our yardage projections. Iowa State’s counterweight is a home setting and a rushing attack that just showed real explosiveness, even if Bowling Green offered far less resistance than the Cyclones should expect here.
The matchup turns on first-down efficiency. If Iowa State can stay ahead of the chains, it can control possession and keep the spread in play deep into the game. If Utah wins early downs and forces the Cyclones away from the run, Iowa State will need considerably more from its passing game than our projections suggest.
