Virginia vs. SMU Preview: Can the Mustangs Turn Their Passing Edge Into Separation?

SMU has a promising passing matchup against Virginia, but turning that advantage into a comfortable win is the question for bettors. The No. 24 Mustangs are 8.5-point favorites at DraftKings despite failing to cover in their last three games. Virginia, meanwhile, just rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Syracuse. Our projections point to a clear SMU advantage through the air; the Cavaliers’ latest escape shows why creating separation may take more than a few productive drives.

SMU’s passing game offers the clearest advantage

Our passing-yards projections put SMU at roughly 300 yards, compared with about 205 for Virginia. The rushing outlook is much closer: approximately 135 yards for the Mustangs and 145 for the Cavaliers. That makes passing production the biggest difference in the teams’ expected yardage, rather than a broad SMU advantage in every part of the attack.

Our grades add some balance to that picture: we give SMU’s offense an A-, while Virginia’s defense earns a B+. That’s a capable opponent for the Mustangs, not an obvious mismatch. Virginia’s offense and SMU’s defense both receive B grades, leaving the Cavaliers with a plausible route to competitive possessions of their own.

SMU’s most recent game also offers a useful reminder that its passing output can vary. Kevin Jennings threw for 160 yards in the Mustangs’ 25-16 win over Boston College on October 3, a game played in wet conditions. SMU recorded five sacks, and a forced fumble and a punt return helped set up short touchdown drives. The Mustangs have had an open weekend since then; Virginia played last Saturday.

Winning and covering have been different stories

SMU is 4-1, but across its five games this season, it has covered once, missed three times and pushed once. Its last two victories came by 10 points against Missouri State and nine against Boston College, falling short of much larger favorite lines. The smaller spread this week changes the assignment, so those misses are more useful as context than as a reason to automatically oppose SMU.

Virginia’s latest win had its own warning signs. The Cavaliers beat Syracuse 28-25 on Saturday, with Jekail Middlebrook rushing for 95 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. But Virginia was outgained 430-288 and went scoreless on six straight possessions after its opening touchdown. The comeback showed resilience; repeating that long dry spell would make keeping pace with SMU much harder.

How the matchup fits a 51.5-point total

The 51.5-point total puts the focus on whether SMU’s passing production is met by a steadier Virginia attack. We project about 435 total yards for the Mustangs and 350 for the Cavaliers, an outlook that leaves room for sustained drives. Turning those drives into points is the concern: Virginia’s recent scoring drought and SMU’s modest output against Boston College provide counterweights, although that wet-weather game isn’t a clean template for this matchup.

Our historical betting data shows that 11 of Virginia’s 14 games over the past year finished Under, producing a profit of 6.99 units from flat one-unit Under bets. The more immediate picture is less one-sided: Virginia’s six games this season have split evenly between Overs and Unders. That distinction matters at 51.5—the longer history offers context, while this season hasn’t established the same consistent low-scoring pattern.

The key is sustained production

SMU’s clearest advantage is through the air, supported by our higher offensive grade, and it comes into this game after a week off. Virginia counters with a competitive defensive evaluation and a slightly stronger rushing projection. The spread asks SMU to turn that passing advantage into sustained separation, but its recent noncovers came against substantially larger lines. At the total, Virginia’s ability to avoid another long scoring drought is the central uncertainty: its comeback showed it can recover, while the six empty possessions explain why the final score alone doesn’t settle the scoring outlook.
