Chicago has already shown it can win a tight game in Cleveland. Now the Guardians need to pair their pitching strength with some timely hitting. The White Sox enter ALDS Game 2 with a 1-0 series lead and eight wins across their last 10 games, yet Cleveland remains the moneyline favorite. That makes the central question an interesting one: can the Guardians contain Chicago’s bats while getting more out of their own scoring opportunities?
Game 1 came down to a few big chances
Munetaka Murakami’s two-run homer supplied the decisive swing in Chicago’s 3-0 win Saturday. Five White Sox pitchers combined for a three-hitter and 12 strikeouts. Cleveland loaded the bases with two outs in both the third and fourth innings but couldn’t bring anyone home.
That’s useful context for the rematch. The Guardians weren’t entirely without opportunities; they failed to finish the ones they created. Chicago, meanwhile, turned Miguel Vargas’ leadoff single in the fourth into two runs with Murakami’s homer. In a game with little scoring, that sequence made the difference.
Why Cleveland is still favored
DraftKings’ moneyline odds make Cleveland a -163 favorite, with Chicago at +135. The Guardians’ strongest case in our grades is their A- pitching, compared with Chicago’s C. The lineup comparison runs the other way: the White Sox earn a C, while Cleveland receives a D+. Those grades make this less a story of an across-the-board favorite and more a matchup between Cleveland’s pitching strength and Chicago’s better-graded lineup.
Gavin Williams starts for Cleveland opposite Anthony Kay for Chicago. Our team projections put the White Sox at roughly six hits and nine batting strikeouts, with the Guardians around eight hits and eight batting strikeouts. That points to more hits and fewer strikeouts for Cleveland, though turning those hits into runs remains the important part after Saturday’s missed chances.

Recent results provide a meaningful counterweight to Cleveland’s favorite status. Chicago is 8-2 over its last 10 games, including its two wild-card wins over Houston and the series opener. Cleveland is 7-3 over its last 10, so the Guardians haven’t been struggling overall either. Still, they’ve scored two runs or fewer in five of those games. Their recent hitting has been uneven rather than uniformly quiet.
The key is making opportunities count
Cleveland’s pitching grade gives it a clear strength to lean on, but Chicago brings both recent success and the better lineup grade. Our hit and strikeout projections suggest the Guardians can create more opportunities; their ability to turn those chances into runs is the hinge. Limiting the White Sox won’t be enough if Cleveland repeats Game 1’s empty scoring chances. With the sportsbook total at 6.5 runs, a wasted productive inning could loom large.
